A horrified scream froze in Kitty’s dry throat.
The body was gnarled; twisted, the flesh and skin and strange, gaunt yellow.
This is what cholera does to a person.
Kitty knew then that she was more scared that she had ever been in her life. She would rather face her mother’s lectures every day about marriage than see a dead body again.
She prayed that she did not contract the disease.

On her birthday, Kitty woke late. It was raining outside - it seemed to do that an awful lot in China, Kitty mused. Walter, of course, had already taken himself off to work. His pyjamas were neatly folded on his side of the bed.
Would her birthday be mentioned or celebrated? She should not expect it. Why would be do anything - she had not told him about it or requested a cake or even gifts. In truth, Kitty did not wish to do anything. Any friends she would have celebrated with were in England.
She went into the kitchen to make herself a pot of tea. And then she saw the delicate Asiatic lily beside a small, English-style cake. He had remembered.
At times like this, Kitty really rather liked being Mrs Fane.
