Summary: A party
Walter watched the stairs for a few agonising moments. Maybe Kitty wouldn’t attend tonight. Perhaps she wasn’t feeling well. And he’d come here for nothing. He could have returned to Shanghai earlier. He liked it there. He could do his work, feel needed, feel important-
She’s radiant.
It was something he would think, but never say. Words did not come easily to him; they often tripped on his tongue. He supposed that was why he made a good scientist. He was good at thinking, not saying.
Kitty descended like a lady born into privilege. Walter watched her hand on the sleek wooden banister. Her fingers were small and long. Dainty. Her hair was curled and a shiny mink brown.
I wonder if I’m in love with her.
He had never been in love before. Was it a strange, bubbling feeling that made one giddy inside? That must be it. He had read of it in books.

Summary: Walter wants to surprise Kitty.
A parcel for Kitty. That would cheer her, Walter thought as he made his way home on a break from his working day. He had thought to surprise her, perhaps also buy some flowers. He did love to spoil her, anything to make her happy, to see a smile on her face.
He expected to perhaps find her playing cards with herself, composing a letter to Doris, or fanning herself on the sofa, drifting into a nap. He loved to tuck a throw around her, taking care of her.
The one thing Walter hadn’t expected was to find the bedroom door locked.
His wife was not alone. And he had an awful, sinking feeling that he knew who was with her at this moment.
The man in question wouldn’t be playing cards, that was for sure. The scoundrel!
Walter placed the parcel on a table to the left of the bedroom door, and hurriedly made his way back to work. He needed time to think.
Time to grieve.
