Summary: Walter is disappointed with himself and with Kitty.
It took everything Walter had within him not to shake with fury, with disappointment. Not disappointment that stemmed from Kitty - but from himself. How could he have seen what was so plainly not there to be seen?
He said, “I knew when I married you that you were selfish and spoiled, but I loved you.” When she didn’t respond, didn’t move a muscle, he continued, “I knew you married me to get as far away from your mother as possible, and I hoped that one day..” Inside, his heart lurched. She was so pretty, in that floral dress, it brought out the blue of her eyes. So pretty - but so shallow. “There’d be something more. I was wrong. You don’t have it in you.”
She turned, and he saw the quick flash of pain in her eyes. He made himself ignore it. She had betrayed him, he had adored her, and she had betrayed him. There was nothing worse she could do, as far as Walter was concerned.
Have I not shown my love for you accurately? Often enough?
It was true that he did get distracted occasionally, well, all right, quite a lot, but….
But he’d loved her. And she had not respected his feelings. The cold urge for revenge seeped through him. She was going to Mei-ton-fu with him. And he had just thought of the perfect travelling route.
