“I’d advise any Westerners to stay indoors.” Yu told Walter as he stood in the doorway of the makeshift lab.
Walter nodded. “All right.” He didn’t need to travel anywhere. Waddington would know not to leave - and that man was likely too happy to leave his own house, with his exotic ladyfriend-
Kitty. Kitty didn’t know about the warnings, she didn’t know not to go outside-!
Walter felt an urgency build inside him, something he’d never sensed before, at least, not regarding another human behind. He rushed to find one of the nuns who worked and lived in the convent.
“Sister.” He stopped a young nun, her head bowed, her hair covered in a coarse grey habit. He touched her arm lightly. “Has Mrs. Fane been inside the convent today?”
The nun hesitate before saying, “Oui, doctor - but she left a few minutes ago.”
Walter felt his pulse thud in his throat. Good heavens. He barely managed to thank the nun before hurrying on his way.
Where is she? How far along the road to home is she?
