Summary: It's pouring in Shanghai
“It’s raining cats and dogs.” Kitty stared morosely out of the window as she fanned herself. It was so hot, and yet so very wet. She had never experienced anything like it. It was a veritable monsoon.
It was a quiet evening. Like many evenings spent in her new home, Kitty mused sadly. What could she do? She’d tired of all her books. She’d written to Doris and their parents twice already this month and hadn’t had a reply yet.
She looked over her shoulder at Walter. He worked at his typewriter, a stack of important-looking journals and papers beside him. Perhaps he hasn’t heard me. His work is important after all.
She fanned herself some more. She was bored. So bored. And wasn’t it Walter’s responsibility to entertain her?
Well, perhaps not all the time. But she was bored, and she needed someone to talk to. She said again, to Walter’s straight-backed form: “It’s raining cats and dogs.”
Walter said, “Yes, I heard you.”
He didn’t elaborate. Kitty sighed inwardly and looked outside. She wondered whether she should say something else. He did look as if he was steeped deeply in his work. They should get a pet, she decided. A little dog or a cat she could stroke and cuddle and talk to.
Did people have pets in Shanghai?
