Summary: Kitty feels a trickle of fear.
"Death to Foreigners." That was what the parchment read. It felt dry in her hands, dry and frail. The material was rough against the pads of her fingers.
Kitty could barely stop herself from trembling as she held it, scanning the words over and over again. Surely that wasn't right...
It must be right. Waddington had had a guard posted at her door - a young man, fresh faced and smiling, eager to please, in a smartly pressed uniform and a peaked cap. She was sure he wouldn't be needed..
"I shouldn't worry too much," Walter said without looking at her. "Even the nationalists are afraid of cholera."
Then again - perhaps it was best not to take a chance.
She watched as Walter walked away with Colonel Yu - a fierce, serious-looking man with a hard-set face, and Waddington. As she studied Walter, she noticed that the set of his shoulders had changed - he held his whole body straighter, like he was proud. Like he had a purpose now.
Then, Walter's hat disappeared from sight, and Kitty was left alone with her guard.
