The light was different here. Not like England. Here the sky was such an endless blue - like the ocean, never ending, stretching over the horizon and beyond, beyond to a world Kitty had never imagined.
She was glad she'd come. She was away from her mother, and her annoying sister, and her old life. Goodbye, old life. Hello, exciting adventure.
Kitty held her flowered hat down on her head as she and Walter were ferried to their new house on elegant stretchers. It was so fabulous to be carried.
She stretched out and looked up at the sky. Yes, there was so much glorious light. She wondered that it would ever get dark.
Ahead, Walter laughed as the stretcher-chair he was on jostled slightly. Her gaze was drawn to the line of his back. Perhaps he was a bit thin, but she supposed his work was important and he didn't have time to build nice muscles. And maybe he looked serious a lot of the time, but he had given her this chance, this new lease of life in an exciting new place.
It would be nice, Kitty told herself. She was sure it would be nice.
And at least she was further away from her mother than she'd ever been. That was definitely a good thing.
