http://sagas-stories.livejournal.com/30121.html It had been a month since he’d received the surprise gift from Melanie on his birthday. It was Valentine’s Day tomorrow, and he still had no idea what to give her. Things had been better between them in the last month, but there was still a bit of tension there.
He stood in the shop trying to decide which card to get. There were too many to choose from, each one looking better than the last.
What lies behind us, and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.*
Reading that quote inside the card he was holding made up his mind. This was the card for her. He hoped the words would tell her how he felt and what he wanted.
*~*~*
He woke before Melanie and slowly crept out of bed. After a shower, he put on the new boxers he’d bought the day before. He couldn’t keep the smile off his face thinking of her reaction when she saw them. They were silly, covered all over in love hearts.
He finished dressing and went to the kitchen to fix a breakfast tray. He fetched the card, wrote her name on the envelope, and placed it against the teacup. Then he took the tray into the bedroom and placed it on the bed stand.
She was still sleeping and looked beautiful, as always. After watching her sleep for a few moments, he bent forward and kissed her on the forehead. He wasn’t surprised when she didn’t move. It had been very late before either of them had fallen asleep the previous night.
Orlando wished he didn’t have to leave. He wished he could wake her up and make love with her all day. He sighed and headed out, because he couldn’t ignore his work. If he didn’t show up, he would be out on his ear, and he couldn’t afford to lose it.
*~*~*
He knew she would be home, she never worked on Mondays. So when the lunch break came around he couldn’t stop himself from driving home.
Unlocking the door, he could hear music playing loudly. He silently opened the door and walked in. Seeing the mail on the floor, he bent to pick it up. Something slipped from the pile.
When he picked up the fallen paper, he thought at first it was a handout for some Valentine’s party. He turned the paper around. It looked like a man’s handwriting. It was clearly a Valentine’s card, and probably for Melanie.
Orlando walked further into the apartment. Melanie sat on the couch deep into the work she was doing. He sneaked forward and put his arms around her.
“Happy Valentine’s Day my love.”
Melanie dropped the embroidery and turned around so he could kiss her.
“What are you doing here? I didn’t expect you home until tonight.”
“I missed you.”
She took up what she dropped, put it on the table and came around the couch. She put her arms around him and between the kisses she said, “I missed you too, darling.”
“Let’s get to the bed, I want you now.”
*~*~*
Her reaction when she saw his love heart boxers was priceless. She hated them, and it added to her knowledge about his total lack of good taste when it came to clothes.
*~*~*
Later, when they were sitting at the kitchen table about to eat, he showed her the card.
“Have you any clue who this guy is that sent you this Valentine card?”
She took it, started reading and was silent for a moment.
“Not a single clue, are you sure it is to me?”
“Can’t you see it’s a guy’s handwriting?”
“Yes, I do, but you don’t need to be jealous. Even if I might have a secret admire it is only one guy I love.”
For some reason, that didn’t make Orlando feel better. Thinking back over the past few months there had been too many little things to make him doubt that her love for him was as strong as his was for her.
*~*~*
When work was over and Orlando was on his way to the car to drive home, he put his hand in his jacket pocket and felt something. He took out a card and recognized Melanie’s writing.
She must have placed it there when he went home earlier.
On opening it, he found it was a Valentine card. He read the quote she had written inside: ‘I have found men who didn’t know how to kiss. I’ve always found time to teach them.’¤
Maybe his doubts were all unfounded, or what else could she mean with that quote?
