Yuuko had always had the ability to see all the possibilities. Every action produced infinite waves of reaction and she saw them all. Once, she had intended to tell her mother about something she’d seen with her power, but just as she opened her mouth she heard screaming coming from over a thousand of the nearest possibilities. In that moment she could see that her mother would change with the knowledge of her talent.
From one possibility to the next, she saw her mother shift from love to fear, to worship, to envy, to all the different types of emotion a person could feel. All of them too strong and too fervent for a little girl to handle, especially coming from her mother, triggering a cascade effect. In all possibilities, Yuuko could do nothing but endure as her power was forced to grow far too swiftly and her mind snapped under the strain.
Abruptly closing her mouth, Yuuko retreated to her room to think. Methodically, she began searching through all the possibilities, far and wide. What would happen if she told her father? Her friends? Her aunts? Her uncles? Her grandparents? Would any of them be able to accept Yuuko’s power? All of them would change, triggering an early transformation of her gift before she was ready. And that would destroy her.
That day, Yuuko learned that she could never tell anyone of her power without harmful consequence. So she didn’t.
