Yes he heard the man come in trying to be as quiet as possible but failing, yet again. It didn’t stop him from feinting sleep in hopes of avoiding the inevitable and usual conversation, but when he felt the bed dip and the elder’s lips against his forehead followed by, “I know you are awake my boy, no sense in pretending.” Kraven swallowed hard before turning onto his back so he could face the older man. “Kraven, I am sorry I am late.”
“I know.”
“You know I am busy with this whole affiar.”
“I know.”
“I tried to leave early.”
“Yes, I know.”
“You know I love you right?”
“Yes, I know.”
“Good, for I am tired, exhausted, I will be glad when this gathering is done with. I wish we could spend more time together, I could show you such places." the elder cast a side ways glance. "It was a pity you couldn't have come today to view the country side but you would have been bored…”
Kraven though he couldn’t hurt any more as the elder made excuses on his behalf, but it was a lie, now that the elder was actually there with him, it hurt so much more. He’d heard the same words time and again, even become angry at them and Viktor but it was of no use and only left him hurting more. The raven haired man was a no body now, a blemish to his own kind and his mate the high lord of the vampires and he thought when he’d been welcomed in the elder’s life he could deal with this gap that separated them but it turned out that gap was now something he could not bridge and he had given up trying to do so.
He could never stay long at social events simply because of who he was and he couldn’t display his affections nor receive any from Viktor. How many times could he stand by and watch other vampires speak and interact with his mate and not be affected by it. He couldn’t, yet he couldn’t leave either. In short he was slowly being smothered, trapped in a gilded cage and unwilling to leave.
Kraven listened but didn’t hear any more what Viktor spoke about, what did it matter he was completely out of his league now, his life had come down to existing only as a comfort item. Someone who could hold the elder, share his bed, be with him behind closed doors but nothing more.
So as was ritual for Kraven now to smile and pampered the man, hoping he was appearing to ease the elder’s troubles, even going through the motions of love making but it all had a bitter taste in the former regent’s heart and soul. His life had become a sham now, his ‘just rewards’ for his crimes against the vampires. The former regent took what pleasure he could by allowing himself to fall asleep at long last, his head resting upon the elder’s chest, inhaling the familiar and beloved scent of his lover, hoping his spirit would last one more night.
“I know you long for more my boy.” Viktor quietly spoke, his fingers petting the soft locks of blue black hair feeling once more his skin becoming moist from tears that slowly slipped from the younger vampire. “I know if I could, I would set you free, but I can’t.” Viktor sighed heavily before closing his eyes, his exhaustion catching up to him at last as sleep over took him but not before the softly spoken words mingled with his sleep laden mind.
“I know.”
