Power of Words Part 2

This is something that has been weighing heavily on my mind for quite some time now.  I've been disturbed lately by the seeming obsession people have with tearing others down.  I see this everywhere.  On the news, between politicians, on TV, among writers, in families, in schools, in the work place, among adults and children alike.  It's ( Read more... )

I agree totally. The adage "Sticks and stones will break my bones, but names can never hurt me" is totally false. I have seen too many self-esteem problems caused by unthinking people, especially school-age children. They seem to think that by tearing someone else down, they are justifying their own existence and importance.
We all have bad days and can be short-tempered. If we can only think a moment before we speak, we can make someone else's day a little brighter. Sometimes a smile when you feel someone needs it the least is when they actually need it the most. I have also learned that a simple "Thank you" makes a person feel very good and brightens their day.
My greatest pet peeve is discourtesy. There is no reason why people can't be courteous in their speech and actions. It doesn't take much longer and it sure makes a difference in how you feel and how others feel. WAmom

I've been seeing so much negativity and tearing down lately it makes me sick. I don't know whether people think what they say and do is funny or if they think it'll make them feel better about themselves, but I do know it makes them look a heck of a lot worse than the people they're ridiculing. I can only imagine how unhappy these people must be if they need to hurt others so much. And you're right. If they just took the effort to be polite, it'd make a huge difference in how they feel about themselves.

Wow. What an inspiration your grandfather was. If only everyone could have that attitude. Thank you so much for sharing this. I'm now even more determined to keep pushing on no matter how hard it gets. Because if your grandfather can overcome the obstacles he did, then I can overcome the obstacles in my path.
