Speak

I am LDS (Mormon) which means I am Christian.  My faith is an integral part of who I am.  I have a very personal relationship with God.  I've always tried to live my life according to the values and standards of my faith.  One of the things I believe is that God gave everyone agency.  The freedom to choose for themselves.  This is a precious and ( Read more... )

Thanks for speaking out. Yes, the only answer is to keep speaking. What gift, what a lifeline Laurie Halse Anderson has given to so many teens. Her poem made me cry- I don't even know her- but I'm so damn proud of her :) and all those kids.

Her poem made me cry too. I met Laurie Halse Anderson back in May and she's wonderful. She really is. I really admire her courage and dedication to helping teens with the tough issues that so many people shy away from.

I've never heard of this book (call me sheltered, call me oblivious, etc.) but I like the concept of it. That poem was so powerful - I did a project in college that I had to research a bit about victims of rape and I wish I could have known about this book then! It is a horrible thing for many to have to deal with and having a book they can turn to for help, especially when so many hide what happened for years is so important!

I hadn't heard of it until I really started reading YA, so don't feel bad. When I picked it up at the bookstore, I didn't know what it was, but the first few pages intrigued me, so I bought it. The first time I read it, I cried in several places. My heart just broke for the main character. Speak is one of my favorite books and I feel very strongly that it needs to be made available to teens because you never know who it can help. If you get the chance, I highly recommend reading it.

Oh yes. It's one of my favorite books. It's one I wish I could have written. That I wish I could have the skill to write.

Thank you. I love this book and feel so strongly that it needs to be available to teens because you never know who it could help. That and I also feel very strongly about the right to choose.
