Oh the things you can find when you mow the lawn...

Who knew mowing the lawn could be so interesting/educational?  It seems whenever I get out my big, green, noisy, monster to cut the grass with its deadly blades, I find backyard wildlife scampering out of my way in an attempt to escape certain death or maiming.  (Like how many adjectives I managed to cram into one sentence?)

I remember raising a family of baby bunnies after my dad mowed and scared the mama away forever. Your toad is very cute.

I'm glad that didn't happen here. We still have our family of bunnies. Yesterday we came home from running errands and one of the adults was chomping on weeds in the backyard. I stopped the car halfway up the drive and turned it off so we could watch it and so it could finish its meal.

It's just not damp enough here for toads or frogs -- you can hear them in forest ponds, but they don't usually wander into people's yards. I wish they did -- great pictures :)

We don't get them in our yard very often but there is a bit of a marshy area a few blocks down. So that's probably where he came from.

He was actually pretty calm too, considering it had to be scary for us big humans to be holding him and having barely escaped from the lawn mower.
