Research

Sorry guys, I don't have a teaser to share today, even though it's Tuesday.  Instead, I'll talk about little bit about what I'm doing now that I'm done with Wayworn, I'm in the process of getting ready to write my next book.  As badly as I want to work on the sequel to Wayworn, the main characters from a completely unrelated story that came to me ( Read more... )

Isn't research fun? :) I like that you're trying the male MC. I've not done that yet -- I mean, I've shared POV between male and female, but I haven't done all male yet.

I have 2 MC's. 1 male, 1 female. It'll be told in alternating 1st person narratives. I have to admit, even though I have written scenes in male characters' POV's before, they've always been short. I've never tried writing half a book in a male POV. I'm nervous about getting it right.

I love research.

Don't be ashamed of your outlining ways. There's nothing to be ashamed of, says one outliner to another.

Normally I'm too impatient to enjoy researching and it's more a necessary evil, but I will admit I'm having fun this time around. What little I am finding is pretty cool and has already spawned several scene ideas.

And I'll work on not being ashamed of outlining. ;)

I know that area! anonymous November 3 2009, 20:34:26 UTC
Just because it is a Ute reservation doesn't mean there are not other tribal descents living there... However I've only met Navajo Indians besides Utes living in the Basin. Good luck finding info on the Fremont culture, if I find anything around here I'll let you know!

Yeah I know Utes aren't the only tribes there, but they're the ones that have the most information. But I'm not looking for modern day stuff, more like stuff from hundreds of years ago. And during that time, the Utes were more nomadic and that doesn't work for what I want. Whereas the Fremonts were more hunter/gatherer/farmer types from what I've been able to find. I'm kind of making my own culture for the book that pieces together bits from the Fremonts, Anasazi (even though those are from Arizona/New Mexico), and a little bit from the Utes.

I'd appreciate anything you might find on them. :)

I was thinking about you as I made this post. Remember hiking out to those hills with me? And I think you were with me and my parents the day we went out to Dinosaur National Monument and the cliffs with the Fremont petroglphs.

I'm only on the prewriting for Dreamwalker and it's already bringing back so many memories. Remember the cave with Charlie J's Hilltop Diner? That cave (but not Charlie's diner) is gonna be in the book big time

I'll look for something, maybe I can stop by the library in Vernal today Hubby and I should be heading there later!
I remember how much in love you were with Charlie at the time, all those memories came flooding back, remember our boondoggle fight?

That would be so awesome of you, Crystal!

And hey, just about everyone had a crush on Charlie, so it wasn't just me. ;) I vaguely remember the boondoggle fight.

I am one of those writers as well, but honey here is the major irony. I won't sit down to do a research unless I am head first into the story. A rather messy way to handle things, but what can you do, when your nature is so firmly connected with sloth. Anyway great to hear you are handling something else.

That's what I did with Wayworn. I'd wait until I absolutely had to research something before I'd do it but then found myself rewriting a bunch of stuff. I thought it might be easier to try doing the bulk of my research *before* I start writing. That and I'm struggling to get a good handle on my male MC so I thought researching so I could do the world building for him would help with that.

Yeah, I hope I learn my lesson until the next project I attempt to do. :) And the next story will need heavy research in Hawaiian mythology.

Thanks. I'm really excited to work on it. I think it's going to be a lot of fun. I'm in love with the story and my female MC is fun to have in my head. Plus, since it takes place where I used to live, I'm having fun reliving those days. I really loved living there and have so much material to draw from to add to the story.
