Another day, another win for La La Land. (Image: WBUR/Paul Drinkwater/NBC via AP)
Once again, La La Land dominated an awards show in the season, this time in Golden Globes, extending its momentum built since Critics' Choice Awards. While the movie race is as lopsided it is, the TV race on the other hand was more interesting to look at, with The People vs. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story managed to win two out of three possible wins yet with The Night Manager and The Crown also snatching two wins, preventing any chance for another of the show's domination in the TV field.
I've written this article on the World Fandom Championship Tumblr (which you can see it
here), hoping that it could attract some new Tumblrites. But it seems I haven't got the audience I desired, so perhaps I had to unleash Plan B: Join some fandoms. My Tumblrs are fandom-centric after all, I should consider joining some multifandom communities or sort like that, same goes to the Twitter btw.
AS IT HAPPENED
Being a continuation to the 2017 Awards Season, the 74th Annual Golden Globe Awards took the stage at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, hosted by The Tonight's Show Jimmy Fallon. The nominees and winners have been decided by more than 90 members of the Los Angeles-based group Hollywood Foreign Press Association, with La La Land and The People vs. O.J. Simpson being the two headliners for both movie and TV categories as both racked the most number of nominations: seven for the former, and five for the latter.
Continuing the current Awards Season after Critics' Choice Awards, the 74th Annual Golden Globe Awards took the stage at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles hosted by The Tonight's Show Jimmy Fallon.
A series of first categories for movies and TV were given to Nocturnal Animals' Aaron Taylor-Johnson for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture, followed by a series of first TV winners: Billy Bob Thornton for Best Actor TV Series (Drama) for Goliath, Atlanta for Best Comedy Series, and Tracee Ellis Ross for Actress in a Television Series - Comedy or Musical, and Best Television Series - Comedy or Musical for Black-ish, to which she dedicated her award
to all the women of color and
colorful people whose stories, ideas, (and) thoughts are not always considered worthy and valid and important. Atlanta would later score another win in the form of Donald Glover's Best Comedy or Musical Series Actor win, which pretty much breaks every prediction where Rachel Bloom, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Gina Rodriguez, Jeffrey Tambor, and Gael García Bernal winning another Golden Globe.
The People vs. O.J. Simpson went on to win two awards in an attempt to outclass the TV field, with the show itself and Sarah Paulson winning their respective categories. Unfortunately, its projected third win blew off at the hands of The Night Manager's Hugh Laurie, who also defeated Mr. Robot's Rami Malek, an Emmy winner with a good potential to also win a Golden Globe. The Night Manager would went on to win a Best Supporting Actress honor in the form of Olivia Colman, tying up the AMC drama with the FX series, until Tom Hiddleston was named as the winner for Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television, eventually being the TV dominator of the night (had to edit my Tumblr's coverage as it was two, not three. Sorry!).
Netflix's The Crown brought a double down with Claire Foy winning Best Actress in a TV Series, Drama and also Best Television Series, Drama, forcing Game of Thrones, Stranger Things, This is Us, and Westworld to go home with empty hands. Basically, none of the HBO shows won any award, and this would tie itself up with The People and Atlanta, creating a three-way tie. (And of course, the Tumblr post needs this revision too!)

In the movie race, La La Land outlined its series of first wins in Original Score and Original Song departments, and later on extended its win count with wins in Best Comedy Actor (for Ryan Gosling) and Best Original Score (for Damien Chazelle) before getting three more in Best Actress (Emma Stone), Best Director, and Best Motion Picture for Comedy or Musical, eventually winning all of its nominations and also bested
the previous record holders of the same gala Midnight Express and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
Other movie wins would include Fences' Viola Davis for Supporting Actress honor in Motion Picture not without a twist of a
"Hidden Fences" meme when Michael Keaton listed Viola's nomination, Zootopia winning another Best Animated Film trophy since Critics' Choice, Casey Affleck of Manchester By The Sea winning Best Drama Actor, Elle's Isabelle Huppert for the Actress counterpart as well as the movie itself for Best Foreign Movie, and Moonlight as the Best Drama Motion Picture winner, as the night's final presentation.
With the majority of movies winning one category, namely Moonlight, Manchester By The Sea, Nocturnal Animals, Zootopia, and Fences, La La Land is named as the outright dominator of the Golden Globes, following a couple of TV contenders The Night Manager, The People vs. O.J. Simpson, The Crown, and Atlanta tailing behind. From here, La La Land successfully pulled a
Mineirazo, a 7-1 condition originated when Germany shamed Brazil during the 2014 World Cup semifinal with above score, towards the mentioned movies, with only Elle, the French movie staring Isabelle Huppert, not affected by it. Going forward, the movie is definitely in for the awards treble (CCAs, Golden Globes, and Oscars) whenever Oscars is within the sight.
THE NIGHT'S HEADLINERS
"Disrespect invites disrespect, violence incites violence. When the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose." Meryl Streep during her Cecil B. DeMille Award speech (Image: Entertainment Weekly on Twitter)
In what was called as the gala's most notable moment, Meryl Streep received the Cecil B. DeMille Award, honoring the outstanding contributors of the world of entertainment, presented by Viola Davis. Before giving away the award, Viola commented that the actress's artistry reminded everyone "of the impact of what it means to be an artist" and then added that what Viola felt that what she has in her -her body, face, and age- is enough. Upon acceptance, Meryl
spoke about immigration (she also took time to outline the non-LA backgrounds of various actors and actresses) also slammed Donald Trump's
"performance" of mocking New York Times' Serge Kovaleski, the disabled reporter, to which she said it broke her heart when she saw it. Meryl ended the speech by quoting the late Carrie Fisher: "As my friend, the dear departed Princess Leia, said to me once, 'Take your broken heart, make it into art.'" Aside from that, a tribute for the late Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher were also present.

Of course, there are other moments that made the night's Golden Globes a headliner, one of them is the Cold Open which features an extended musical number of La La Land, with a twist of familiar faces like Jon Snow, Stormtroopers, Jimmy Fallon the host, Stranger Things kids, and many more. Personally, I haven't watched this video and intended to do so but haven't got the time for that (PSA: I just logged in after not being online for almost a day, internet subscription), but if you readers are a big believer that this universe is one big crossover and believe Westeros people and Stormtroopers coexist while having some private musical sessions with the main characters of La La Land, this is definitely your video.
SPOTTED: Andrew Garfield and Ryan Reynolds are kissing, cue the fan fictions! (Image: News.com.au)
Last but not least, you have the liplock between Andrew Garfield and Ryan Reynolds, which it was done because the Deadpool actor lost to Ryan Gosling in the Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy category as he walked the stage. Later, Andrew Garfield
explained it on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert saying that he "just wanted Ryan to know that [Andrew] loved him no matter whether he won or lost." Apparently, Entertainment Tonight's Kevin Frazier showed
the video evidence to the La La Land trio of Damien Chazelle, Emma Stone, and Ryan Reynolds in the backstage interview. Hilarity ensued.
Honorable mention also goes to Sunny Pawar, the young actor who plays the younger version of the main actor Dev Patel's character in Lion, making them a menacing and cute couple in the gala, and Donald Glover's #SoulGlobes movement, after taking the stage twice: once to accept Atlanta's win for Best Comedy Series, and again for Best TV Actor in a Comedy.
NEXT STOP: PEOPLE'S CHOICE
In less than a week's time, the field will change from critics-driven battlefield to an arena where TV and movie fans vote for their best in an attempt for their favorite(s) winning a coveted award that is People's Choice Awards, the first series of vote-based award shows in the calendar. Continuing the Awards Season, PCA might not be everyone's cup of tea with the aforementioned system, but this will allow the next batch of shows and movies without any chance of getting into renowned award shows such as CCAs and Golden Globes have their stand in the race.
Among all the nominations, Deadpool maintains momentum built since Critics' Choice, with Grey's Anatomy all set for the TV domination as Stranger Things will throw its hat to the ring in the vote-based ground. All nominations can be seen
here and I did peek the whole list
in my last Critics' Choice post, but the even bigger picture will be covered in the next post.
And now I had to watch La La Land, seeing if the movie lives up to its award wins for yours truly!
Saliha on Tumblr created this amazing art piece of La La Land I discovered after Golden Globes ended which I believe can double as a celebration of its award season success! Don't forget to
