The Boards, Thursday

Jono wasn't teaching, this semester.

That was a weird enough thought to him that he needed to think it again as he stepped into the Boards and took a look around the lobby. He wasn't teaching this semester. Not here, anyway. They still called him in for the odd class at the Jean Grey School, but he'd made certain Logan got the memo that he was ( Read more... )

Eliot had cleaned his place up -- and out -- as much as he could pre-move, and he'd done about all the class planning he could take for the time being. His garden was tended (it didn't need much in the winter) and if he did any more running around the island, his knees were going to start pointing out just how old he was getting again. He was about as much at loose ends as he ever was, which was how he ended up wandering into the Boards to see what was going on.

"Jono," he greeted, rapping on the wall to make sure he didn't startle him. "Saw you weren't on the class schedule this time around."

//Eliot,// Jono greeted, glancing up from his stack of mail. It... really was a depressing stack of mail. He needed to get over here more often for things besides failed wedding attempts. //That's right. Decided I could use a break.//

He wrinkled his nose a bit.

//I already regret it.//

Because really. Jono didn't stagnate well. At all.

"Yeah, you never much struck me as the 'taking a break' sort." Eliot smirked faintly. It wasn't as though he had much room to talk about that sort of thing. "You gonna run this place instead? I kinda always thought it was abandoned."

It hadn't done much since he'd moved to the island.

Yeah, Jono actually managed a grimace at that. Which was a mean feat, for a man without a mouth.

//It sort of had been,// he replied. //Which is on me. I own th'place, at least on the paperwork. I just... also sort of happened to leave it to rot, after- it's complicated.//

It wasn't that complicated, really. Jono shrugged anyway.

//Figured it was about time I stop neglecting this place and actually do something with it. No better time than all of this free time I've got coming up.//

Huh. Peter didn't remember ever seeing anyone in this place, except when he'd delivered flowers. And since Jono and his fiancé were already married...

"Hello?" he called, looking around.

//H'lo,// Jono called back, and a moment later he was peeking his head out from his office, blinking out at Peter. //Who knew all I had t'do in order to get people in here was turn on a light?//

Peter smiled and came over. "Well, it helps to know there's someone here? There hasn't been any theater here since I've been in town, so I wasn't even sure it was anything but a sort of banquet hall."

//Hasn't been anything more than that in a few years,// Jono replied, shrugging his shoulders sheepishly. //I sort of cut and ran a few years back. Had a bad run of luck away from this place and couldn't bear to be around a stage for a while. At least the multitude of failed marriages mean I don't have as much dusting to do as I otherwise might...//

Parker was mostly tracking Eliot. Because she still needed to do that, and was not going to say that out loud. But still. This place was interesting.

"It looks like there were bats up here, at one point," she called down to Jono, the next time he walked by.

Jono blinked, and then squinted upward at the catwalks. And then he blinked some more.

//Hopefully they weren't making a mess of anything? Only bat I can think of that'd be up there on the regular wasn't exactly the sort to leave droppings everywhere.//

And he'd really have to have a word with Dracula if he had.

//Comfortable up there, Parker?//

"There's little scratch marks," Parker noted, then reached for one of the ropes that lead downward. "Yeah, I like it up here. Great sight-lines. And connected bits." At least they were connected if you were Parker, and had her sense of balance. She was still wearing a jingle-bell headband, and sparkly bits around her cuffs. Not exactly hiding. "Also, Merry Late Christmas Happy Early New Year Congratulations on Your Wedding Thing."

//Marriage, anyway,// Jono amended, keeping his tone light. //We never did manage a wedding where we didn't get almost killed, or where we actually knew we were meant to be the grooms. It was on the to-do list, at least to have some sort of 'thank god we survived long enough to at least sign the papers' afterwards, but we haven't really given much thought to that part.//

He settled down in one of the theatre seats and idly started opening envelopes again.

//But Merry Christmas and all of those other things, with the exception of the wedding thing, to you, too.//
