The Causeway, Saturday Morning

It was a distinctly bleary-eyed Dante that came limping back across the causeway that morning. He needed a bottle of water, an hour or seven to sleep, and then he needed to get right back to doing what he'd been doing for more or less the last twelve hours. Ada had managed to stumble to the edge of the park, even as tempting as the water of the pond was right now. A dim part of her mind was informing her that the water could make the pain stop, but she couldn't count on anyone knowing they'd need to come pull her out.

She was just going to sit here for a bit, on the swings of the playground, until she could breathe again. Then she'd get the rest of the way to the clinic.

Dante'd been fighting his way to the dorms, slow but steady - maybe because there were a lot of them. Maybe just because he was dragging it out. By now, he was near the park, Rebellion cutting through disgusting tentacles like butter.

"I shoulda brought some bug spray!" he called, kicking an insectoid head across the street-- and straight into the park. By the swings.

Ada just stared down at the severed head, uncomprehending. How did that get here? It didn't belong on the playground.

Ada didn't want it anywhere near her.

A vicious kick spend it rolling back in the direction it came from, but that's when it finally registered that there was something else out there besides the ugly things. Someone, actually.

A laugh bubbled-up past her lips, tinged just slightly with a hint of the crying she'd been doing earlier. "I don't think they make bottles a' bug spray big enough," she called back.

Dante's head shot up, and it was a good thing he'd run out of Brood just now. "Ada?" he called. "The hell you're doing out here?"
