A staple of every event, for the skulkers.

Zack had never really been the 'shadowy corners' sort, back when he was a student on the island. He'd been more the 'out in the open, dancing with everyone, flirting with almost anything including table legs' sort.

These days... the shadowy corners seemed more his speed. He wasn't lurking, so much, no, but he was kind of standing off to the side, his massive sword on his back and his arms crossed over his chest, quietly watching the crowd with curious, glowing-blue eyes. Maybe he'd spot somebody familiar. Maybe he wouldn't. Either way, he was here.

He knew all too well that there were worse places he could be.

Now there was someone he hadn't seen in a long time. "Zack," Leto said, approaching the shadowy corner. "Why are you hiding here?"

Oh, hey. There was a familiar face it was actually a relief to see. Zack gave Leto a little smile.

"I'm not hiding, exactly," he replied, which... really wasn't the truth, and he didn't think Leto would buy it for an instant. "I'm just sort of... taking it easy. Waiting for the right moment to step out and leap into the action, that sort of thing."

Suuure, Zack.

"Hey, Leto. How are you?"

Leto could see through even the best of lies, so no, he wasn't fooled, but he assumed Zack had his reasons.

"I am quite well," he said. "And you? It is good to see you again, old friend."

"It's been far too long," Zack replied, reaching a hand forward to offer to Leto to clasp in greeting. "I'm here, and I've been worse," both of these things were true, and also fairly loaded statements, "so I really can't complain. I can imagine we've both been pretty busy since we went our respective ways, huh?"

"So I believe," Leto replied, shaking his hand. "I am escaping the burdens of ruling an empire for a few days, leaving it in the capable hands of my wife."

Alice would certainly do her best to confuse any visiting diplomats.

"Even rulers need a break now and again, huh?" Zack smiled a little more warmly at the thought. "I hope she's doing well, too?"

"She is. Alice has a skill for politics. And our daughter is now ten years old and takes after her mother." He made no effort to hide the pride he felt.

"A daughter," Zack said, sounding... kind of in awe, actually. "I guess I'm ten years late for congratulations, but still... that sounds like the sort of thing that deserves them. What's her name?"

"Hania," he said. "And thank you. You would have been invited to her naming ceremony had I been able to contact you then."

"I'm sorry I missed it," Zack replied, honestly. "But it's an honor to know that I would have been kept in mind."

He'd missed so much. He'd missed too much.

It hurt a little in ways he didn't entirely know how to hide behind a smile.

"So, what stories have you to tell," Leto asked, meaning 'what stories can you tell'.

Most of Zack's stories these days were kind of depressing, unfortunately. 'Did I ever tell you about that one time I was held prisoner by the company I work for and experimented on for years against my will' was not really happy dance conversation.

"Things have been... kind of quiet," Zack offered, after a pause for consideration. "I rescued a friend from a place where he was being held captive, but he's unconscious, now. Hiding him from anyone who might go after him to try to send him back has been taking up a lot of time."

Leto nodded. "I wish your friend a quick recovery, then." It was sad to see how the friend he remembered had turned so serious and subdued.

"I rarely go a day without thinking back on my time here."

"Thanks," Zack replied gratefully, giving Leto a little smile. "And this place really does leave an impression, doesn't it? I used to think I was going to crawl out of my skin, back when the company had me stationed here. But now I... I sort of wonder if I should have stayed, you know?"

For a million little reasons, but the one that had stolen away his smile was one of the bigger ones.
