Didi loved the Friday before holiday weekends. Everyone seemed more relaxed. Somehow, it even happened on the island -- where it wasn't like most people worked a five-day week to start with. And because Memorial Day marked the start of summer, it was even better: The anticipation in the air was electric

Kitty had been meaning to come in and check in, but her last few weeks had been a little nuts. So today was the day she got to come in and say, "How's it going, not-really-new girl?"

"So far so good," Didi said, with a little wave of greeting. "It's been quiet last few weeks, but that's probably just how it goes sometimes."

[throughaphase]

"Pretty much. And last week was the mixer, so." And then everything went crazy. "Quiet can be good now and then, I guess."

"And it's not like it's going to last for long," Didi nodded. "Besides, the Mixer was fun. I stopped by before my shift and ran into a ton of people I hadn't seen since high school."

"Was it weird?" Kitty wondered.

[living_endless]

"LIttle bit, yeah," Didi admitted. "My old roommate didn't think he was going to see me again, so he kind of spazzed."

[throughaphase]

"Hopefully in a good way," Kitty said. She'd seen reunions like that go either way.

[living_endless]

"Yeah, so ... you know how everybody here has some really long, really interesting, borderline unbelievable story?" Didi asked. "One of those things got in the way."

She reflected.

"He seemed happy to see me, anyhow."

[throughaphase]

"You know you can't say something like that without making me curious, right?" Kitty said. "It's impossible."

[living_endless]

"I know," Didi acknowledged. "But 'technically I died, but it was cool because I'm immortal' isn't the kind of thing you want to spring on somebody without warning. Not somebody you like, anyhow."

[throughaphase]

"Actually, between mutants and vampires, there's nothing in that that I'm not sort of used to," Kitty said thoughtfully. "Don't know what that says about me..."

[living_endless]

"That you're from a world like mine," Didi guessed. "Or that you've been here way too long. I'm not sure which. The deal is, I'm my world's embodiment of death. Or an aspect of it, anyhow."

[throughaphase]

Kitty had to turn that over in her head for a second. "Okay, when you say 'death,' you mean...?"

[living_endless]

"I mean, when the show's over, I help you out of your seat and get you a cab home," Didi told her, matter-of-fact. "Everyone and everywhere. There's other stuff I do, too. It's kind of ... big. But psychopomp's the main part of it for people."

[throughaphase]

"Huh. I wouldn't have called that," she said.

She didn't know if it was better or worse that she didn't know this when her world's Clint got killed, honestly. She probably would have bugged Didi with questions. And probably cried.

Didi smiled, partially because that was so much better than yet another question about robes and scythes. "Usually people don't," she said. "I mean, I can see why. It's not the kind of thing you hear every day. Even here."
