Fandom High 20 Year Reunion Mixer, Community Center, Saturday Evening

May 16, 2015 21:06

Much like the last time this event had taken place, it would appear to anyone who came to the community center tonight that whoever had been responsible for decorating for the reunion mixer actually had some taste. The decorations were simple - blue linen on the tables with gold flowers as centerpieces, and a notable lack of any tacky accoutrements ( Read more... )

Hanna hadn't been much of a party person before. That hadn't changed. The hiding out in shadows, well, that wasn't -- new?

She was, however, Lurking With Intent right now.

Was the intent to be spotted and glee'd at? Hopefully it wasn't to maintain a low profile or anything, because there was a Kathy beelining towards her right now, large smile on her face.

"Hanna?" she asked, almost disbelieving. "It is Hanna, isn't it? It's me! Kathy!"

That had Hanna blinking, and then saying, "Kathy... Li?" She couldn't help a small smile from forming as she recognized the other woman. "It's been a very long time."

"Twenty years," Kathy agreed, beaming at Hanna like it had been yesterday. "How have you been? I'm so sorry I fell out of touch--" understatement "--but it's absolutely wonderful to see you!"

"I didn't keep in touch either," Hanna admitted, coming out of the shadows a little bit, while keeping her target in her peripheral vision. "I haven't been back in ten years or so. I just was very busy. Traveling and working. Are you still in L.A.?"

"Yeah," Kathy said, leaving out the part where there wasn't much else to go. Much of America was still an ex-infested wasteland. She was pretty thrilled that she had most of LA to move around in, instead of just inside the perimeter of the Mount. "Kind of the mayor there now, actually. Doesn't leave me a lot of time for travel."

Hanna gave a surprised laugh, looking impressed. "That's wonderful. I can understand why you haven't been back very much then." She checked out Kathy's wedding ring, and said, "Not alone, I see, either."

"No," Kathy said, her smile practically lighting up her whole body. "Nick is around, probably eating an entire cow. Beef's almost non-existent back home, so he's indulging while he can. I--don't know if you ever met him? He moved back to LA before you got to the island, I think, and his trips back east were pretty rare."

"No, I don't think I did," Hanna admitted, allowing herself to be distracted from her goal for the moment. "Was he a student here as well? Or did you know him from before, in L.A.?"

Hanna's own ring fingers were bare and without any tan lines; she couldn't remember the last time she'd been on a date.

Maybe if she stopped trying to assassinate good people, her social life would pick up! Just a thought!

"He graduated high school long before I ever started," Kathy said with a small laugh. "Nick was in his late twenties when we met, working at the hotel here on the island. But we fought crime together, then found out that we were not only from LA but the same LA. We partnered up to fight the Seventeens, and then the exes, and then somewhere down the line, we ended up falling in love."

It wasn't like she enjoyed it! That would be creepy. She was just good at it.

"That's... sweet," Hanna decided, a little pang going through her. "I'm glad for you, that you've been together that long." She considered a moment, and then asked, "Are you enjoying the reunion so far?"

"I am!" Kathy said, looking around at the gathering fondly. "I'm running into so many people I haven't really let myself think of in twenty years. Everyone's doing so well." Being all alive and stuff. Good on them! "It's like a steady parade of people and things I've missed over the years. I might overdose on steak and exotic desserts before the weekend is over."

She laughed and then cocked her head at Hanna. "And you? How have you been? Having fun?"

"Getting to see a lot of the world." That part was all right. "Thinking of quitting my job, though." That part was... not. "It stopped being fun a few years ago." New management took over. Job descriptions changed. Hers in particular. "I haven't decided where to settle down, though."

Finland was looking good.

"I'd invite you back to my LA, but I don't think you'd like it very much," Kathy said, spreading out her hands. "I might have been eliding over a few things. Even now, twenty years later, it's still pretty...dangerous."

Hanna gave her a sweet smile. "That is okay. I am thinking of being alone for a while, maybe somewhere quiet. It's been a great many cities, one after another, for the last few months." She paused and added, "But it is good to see you. And maybe we can get lunch later, perhaps."

Perhaps not. But it was a nice thought.

"Tomorrow, you mean?" Kathy asked. "I have to go home tomorrow night, I'm on a pretty strict schedule, but I'd love to! And introduce you to Nick, too, if I can drag him away from whatever he's doing." There went another one of those happy, inner-glow smiles. "Have you seen anyone else here? I ran into Sparkle at the coffeeshop earlier, and I know I spotted Raven here, mingling."

That flash of blue made her very distinctive.
