Homecoming Dance 2014, Town Hall, Saturday Evening

Oct 25, 2014 08:27

Upon entering the Town Hall tonight, dance attendees might notice a very definite theme tonight! A very definite, very sparkly theme tonight, with enough glitter strewn around the place that there were, in fact, glitterdrifts piling up around the edges of the dance floor. Everything was glittery, or sequiny, or rhinestoney, with a sort of sci-fi ( Read more... )

You were the responsible adults here. You could have stopped this. You monsters.

Irene was here and unlike yesterday, absolutely dressed to the nines. Her hair was once again up, her makeup was once again perfect, and she was going to just be over here in her darling Carolina Herrera and make sure none of the students got up to anything too bad.

"Ms Adler." Hannibal greeted her with a nod. "Lovely as always. How have you been?" He was in Versace tonight. "Would you care for a glass of wine?"

Because nobody should have to deal with this much glitter without alcohol, and he wasn't touching the punch.

Irene smiled, though she gave him a slightly dubious look to go with it. "Wouldn't that make us very poor examples to the students we're chaperoning?" she asked, lifting her brows. "But -- ooh, Dr. Lecter, is that Versace?"

Men got to wear such wonderful clothing, sometimes.

"It is," he answered with a smile and nod. "Herrera?" he asked of her dress. "She makes good use of color. And we're only poor examples if we get drunk," he pointed out. "The punch seems to end up spiked with alcohol no matter how closely it's watched; I'd say this is the lesser of the evils."

Irene frowned at him, a little less willing to just shrug that off. "Dr. Lecter, we're chaperones," she said quietly, but sternly. "The children here are very competent children, but they're children nonetheless. It's our job to make sure they have their fun night without getting hurt or causing trouble, and we can't very well tell them not to spike the punch if we're drinking ourselves, regardless of whether we get drunk or not."

Mark it on your calendars, boys and girls: Irene Adler just turned down a drink. (Probably a really nice one, too, knowing Dr. Lecter.)

Hannibal raised an eyebrow. "Many of these children have seen worse things than war veterans, and a good deal come from places where drinking ages are an unkown concept." He shrugged. "So long as they avoid trouble, and they know what they're drinking, I'm willing to allow them the alcohol. But," he added with a smile and a bow, "I won't insist; I see your point as well."

"And at least as many of them are just average teenagers," Irene pointed out, lifting her brows a little. "And just because they have superpowers or hail from the past, or whatever the case may be, doesn't mean they're not still children, Dr. Lecter. Even a teenager who's been to hell and back isn't necessarily in control of the effects of alcohol on their bodies and minds. They can drink somewhere I'm not charged with supervising them, and so can I. There's no shortage of opportunity."

She did offer him a little of a pout, and added, "I'm sure I'm missing out on something wonderful, though," she added, nodding to the bottle.

"You are, but as you say - there are plenty of opportunities," Hannibal agreed. "Isn't it better for them to drink well-supervised than on their own?" he asked, enjoying the debate. "We can do our best to ensure their safety and lack of trouble while their judgement is impaired."

"I agree, but not if our judgement is impaired," Irene countered with a slight smile. "If someone pulls a knife on someone else -- or, for a more realistic argument's sake, let's say Johnny Storm decides to show off a hair too close to someone's dress -- I don't want to be the slightest bit fuzzy. Even just comfortably so, as a glass of good wine tends to do."

"Ah." Hannibal nodded. "I have a rather higher tolerance," deliberately cultivated for a number of reasons, "so I hadn't realized. Some other time, then. I understand you allowed people to throw pies at you yesterday?"

"It was for a good cause," Irene said, dipping her head lightly, but she was still eyeing him with a very slight frown playing about her lips. "And again, my refusal has less to do with my personal alcohol tolerance and more to do with the fact that I refuse to compromise my credibility as an authority figure. Long-standing rule, both here and in my former profession -- it's unsafe to do anything else, in my opinion. Both for us and for the kids."

Which, really, was at least half as much the reason as the students' safety -- Irene was a big fan of making sure her bases were covered, legally. Or at least had the appearance of being covered.

Hannibal eyed her curiously. "My own profession allows for many different forms of authority, some more formal or relaxed than others. What was yours, if I may ask?"

"I was a dominatrix," she said, as casually as if she might have told him she had been an accountant. Irene smiled, slightly, and acquiesced, "Which might explain my insistence on remaining safety-consciousness."

At least in part. She'd spent most of her adult life avoiding lawsuits and injury.

Whereas Hannibal had lawyers for that sort of thing.

His look turned curious. "I hadn't realized that was a profession, so much as a preference and hobby." He thought about it for a moment. "I can see where safety would be very important, yes. And discretion."

"When money becomes involved," Irene explained, lifting her brows, "one's passion project might mature into one's occupation. And plenty of people are more willing to pay for services than to ask their spouse for something they find embarrassing." That was where most of her business came from, in fact -- senators and duchesses and members of Parliament who didn't want to confide their desires in their husbands and wives. "I was quite high-end, in fact, so yes -- very expensive, and very discreet. Used to keep lawyers on retainer just to make sure I wasn't attracting any suits for slander, let alone injury."
