The Perk, Thursday Afternoon

It was a perfectly regular day at the Perk. Mike had been on a job on the mainland, and had swung by to grab a refreshing coffee on his way back home. He ordered, he paid for his order, and he was waiting for said order when he heard the voice. A woman.

"I just can't be around your lifestyle."

Mindy didn't hear any of that, because she only walked into the Perk a minute or two after the fact. She ordered her drink and then paused for a moment before taking a seat.

"Hey, where do you stand on having a table-neighbor?" she asked with a wave of her hand in the direction of the table next to Mike's. "I'm just asking because I don't want to sit right where all the cold air is blowing in from the door? But then it's kind of like subway etiquette, where if someone sat down right next to me when there's all this space, I'd be kind of like, Whaaaat?"

Even if it had been a few moments, Mike was still kind of reeling from having heard snippets of a rather life-defining fight, there. So she was going to have to forgive him for looking a little dazed when she pulled him away from his thoughts.

"Um -- yeah, no, sit wherever you like, it's cool."

"Thank you," she chirped, taking a seat before she double-taked back at him. "Are you okay? Oh, no, is the coffee weird?"

"Nah, I'm fine." Liar. But he also wasn't going to barf his feelings on a stranger, so that was what he was going with. "So's the coffee."

Jess had just walked in to hear the end of that, and stopped, looking confused.

Mike sighed as he claimed his coffee from the equally confused barista.

"That was... a blip." Yeah, that was one way of putting it. "It was an island thing. It's, apparently it's doing that now."

Mike scracthed the back of his head with his free hand. "I don't know babe, I really don't know."

Trust him, if he'd had the chance, he would've chosen just about anything but lines from that time his life had tried to go completely off the rails.
