Victor grinned across the table at Olive. She was probably taller than he was in those shoes, and she rocked them so hard it didn't even cross his mind as a thing that could matter.

"It feels really good," he said. "I mean, not being a kid anymore is weird, but not in a way I want to complain about. Got any wisdom from your ten entire weeks as an adult you want to share?"

"Shooting a hole through a ballot while smoking a cigarette might exercise most of your over-eighteen freedom," Olive said gravely, "but it's also really hard to do. Other than that, I haven't noticed a huge difference between seventeen and eighteen, though your mileage may vary."

"I'm a little excited about the part where it means I definitely won't end up in foster care," Victor said. "But besides that ... yeah, I don't expect huge changes in my life. I still have even more high school to go than you did."
