The Devil's Nest, Wednesday Evening

Aug 15, 2012 16:16

It was Derek's first day at work, so one might have expected some cheer. Or, you know, any emotion at all. Just a little bit. C'mon, Derek. 'Lurking' isn't an emotion.

So, people would be greeted today by his impression of the world's surliest looking statue.

At least he wasn't working the door?

Not long after Jack arrived, a glass of beer appeared beside him. Followed by a Ronan.

"They need to start announcing the hot new arrivals on island," Ronan said, foregoing 'hello,' as he looked over at Derek. "I almost missed this one."

Jack laughed. "I mentioned him to Emma, but I forgot you'd be interested," he said. "You approve of our hiring decisions?"

"Is the Pope Catholic?" Ronan retorted.

Really, Jack. Have you met Ronan?

"He is until you get through with him," Jack said affectionately. "Be gentle with the new meat, hmmm?"

Jack had met Ronan. He wondered if he should have warned Derek.

It should probably go into the welcome package, alongside the information on teal deer and semi-regular invasions.

"I dunno," Ronan said, looking over at Derek speculatively. "He looks like he could take it a little rough."

//And he's probably listening to every word you say,// Jack warned in French under his breath. //But yes.//

He switched back to English, very deliberately. "I think it's the leather."

Ronan nodded slightly, although he didn't reply in kind -- he didn't speak French, he was fairly certain that Jack didn't speak Gaelic, and the Speech was just as understandable as English.

"I should dig out some of my old leather," Ronan mused. "Powers only know if it'd even still fit right."

Jack could read a bit of Gaelic, but saying he spoke it anything like enough to have a conversation would have been a gross exaggeration. The warning about Derek had been dispersed, anyhow, and -- duty done -- Jack was going to amuse himself.

"Is it such a bad thing if it's a little too tight?"

Ronan smirked. "Why, Mr. Priest," he asked, "are you flirting with me? What would Emma say?"

... Take pictures, probably. Or preferably video. Maybe ask if she could join in.

"Emma would say," Jack decided, leaning back against his bar stool, "that I'm a free man, she's going back to college in a week, and you are very tempting. As long as I'm honest about anything that happens" -- and possibly take pictures -- "I can't imagine her objecting."

Ronan blinked, went through a moment of mental readjustment, and retorted, "We should ask if she wants to join in, first."

Really, it was only fair to extend the offer while she was still living in the same house as them.

"We should," Jack said, and blinked as he went through his own moment of mental readjustment. "Wait, how serious are you?"

He'd only been about half serious, but that was when he thought Ronan wasn't. He and Emma did theoretically have an agreement, after all.

"... Serious enough to go for it, not serious enough to be hurt if it doesn't happen? With or without Emma."

Ronan shrugged. "Honestly, there's part of me that's surprised the three of us haven't all ended up in bed together before this."

"I'm in the same place," Jack told him. "I'd enjoy anything that happened, and it wouldn't surprise me, but I won't cry myself to sleep if we stay platonic."

He looked mischievous as he added, "I may just want to prove I'm better than I was at 17."

Ronan snorted. "If we're neither of us better than we were at seventeen, we've been doing something wrong."

Practice made perfect, after all, and -- current dry spell notwithstanding -- Ronan had hardly been celibate these last few years.

"There is that," Jack said, and nodded to the door. "Should we head home and ... talk about it a bit more?"

And by 'talking' he did not mean talking.
