Dite's Decadent Delights, Monday Afternoon

Nov 28, 2011 17:51

After Dinah's last phone call, the last thing that Karla had felt like doing was going into work. But it was that or stay in her room all day and look at pictures, so several hours after her shift was supposed to have begun, Karla dragged herself into the store ( Read more... )

Isabel had been walking by on the way to the clinic to bring Ronan some fresh baked cookies when she heard the sound of breaking glass.

Repeatedly.

Which drew her attention to the sign. Her resources might be limited in Fandom thanks to a sudden evacuation do to world disappearing, but Isabel was pretty sure she could spare a dollar.

"Hello?"

Karla was willing to work out a deal. Especially for cookies. She needed cookies more than she needed money right now.

"Hi." Karla recognized Isabel from the Reserves and tried to offer her a smile. It wasn't her best attempt. "I promise, 'Dite's doesn't usually look like this."

Isabel would be more then willing to share cookies. They were even edible!

"I was going to say. Somehow this isn't what Decadent Delights brings to mind," Isabel replied with a small smile. "But this looks to be a bit more therapeutic given what's going on."

"It's exactly what I needed today," Karla admitted. "There's another room in the back filled with decadence, if you've a mind for it, but..." Her face fell. "I just lost another friend today. And until someone finds me something I can blast to fix this, I'm left taking it out on snowglobes for awhile."

She offered Isabel one. "Care to join me?"

It was exactly what Isabel needed as well she realized as she set the plate of cookies down and took the snow globe. She smiled bitterly as she read the sentiment on the globe. There's No Place Like Home For The Holidays. Somehow that didn't seem likely this year.

She flung the globe against the wall, taking a perverse pleasure in the harsh sound of shattering glass.

"I'm sorry about your friend. Which doesn't help much, I know."

Karla shrugged. "It's all we kind of can say, right now," she said, holding out another if Isabel wanted it. Tidings of Comfort and Joy to You! "I mean, I said the same thing when you mentioned your whole family being gone and felt just as useless. But it just seems wrong to...not acknowledge someone's loss."

"You're right. But I don't want to talk," Isabel admitted as she took the globe and sent it flying after the first. "I want to hit whoever or whatever is responsible for this. Repeatedly."

"If you find it and promise to share in the beatings, I'll waive the snow globe fee," Karla said wryly. "But how do you punch a--a--a giant patch of nothing in the face?"

"Can I trade cookies for snowglobes?" she asked, gesturing at the plate. "Just leave some for Ronan. It's my pitiful attempt at rent."

"I don't know how to punch it. And Wyatt tried to blast it with power, but it didn't do anything."

Karla gratefully snatched at a cookie, belatedly realizing that she hadn't eaten anything today.

"I haven't seen it yet," she admitted. "I've just been here. Protected in the middle of it all. Like a spider in a web, all I know is what I hear from other people."

Guilty guilty guilt.

"Protected is good. Protected means your friends don't have to worry about you," Isabel pointed out. "I still have friends out there right now. Until I see them here and safe, I can't stop worrying that the next time I call or send them a text, they're not going to be there."

"It's pretty much what I said at the meeting. Just darkness, absolute and complete, swallowing everything in it's path. My parents thought it was just a storm. They didn't realize what it was." But they'd reached for Wyatt all the same, recognizing Isabel's fear. "In a way I'm glad they didn't. I don't think they were afraid."

"That's a small blessing," Karla agreed. "If my people go--I don't want them to know. Just let them keep going about their lives. It will be easier for them, I think."

No time to panic or riot. No reason to. No chance for a misguided hope or fear or attempt to run.

"Exactly. No time to be afraid. No time to worry. Just gone."

A beat.

"I need to throw something again."

Karla wordlessly floated a few more over to Izzy. She was perched on her counter, nibbling at cookies. "Knew this was a good idea," she muttered between bites. "Maybe I should suggest it to the principal."

Isabel plucked the snow globe from the air, hefted it in her hand, then sent it flying towards the wall in a throw that would have made a major league pitcher proud.

"Either this, or maybe a round of the old Fight Club. Because the only thing better then wanton destruction is hitting things."

"We could always see if Lady Ghanima is up for restarting it," Karla suggested. "Because I think there are a few people on the island who would love for the chance to hit things repeatedly."

Liiiiike...most of the student population and no few of the teachers.
