The Devil's Nest, Saturday, 11/12

Nov 12, 2011 16:49

When Bo had woken up today, she found a note by her bed that said Get to work early today to help Tiny with inventory. She didn't entirely remember writing it -- she must've been really tired last night -- but it was in her own handwriting, so it must be true. She had a jobWhich she even managed to find, after a few hours of exploring her room ( Read more... )

"Free!" That would be Kenzi, climbing up to beam at the bartender. "I want one that's free! With oranges and ice cream and strawberries and do you have any cinnamon?"

There had been something 'free' on the island. Kenzi had zeroed in like a fighter pilot.

Bo frowned, because she didn't like the idea of not having one of the ingredients, if they were inventorying stuff. "I don't think so. Lemme ask Tiny!"

She hopped down from her milk crate (which still left her taller than the new girl, thaaaank you) and ran over to the door.

And then made her eyes VERY VERY BIG AND BROWN. The fact that she grabbed Tiny's hands while doing so went unnoticed, more or less, by Bo, and unremembered by Tiny, so if there was any influence going on besides the anime eyes, the world may never know.

After a moment, she ran back. "He's gonna go get some from the store!"

"Yay!" Kenzi cheered, and leaned over the bar. "How come you get to work here, Bo Dennis, bartender?" The other girl looked younger, but she was taller. No fair. "I that your dad?"

Bo giggled. "Omigosh, no. That's Tiny! My dad's name is Sam." Because the other girl totally asked that. Look, it made sense in Bo's head. They had different names, so clearly they weren't the same person. Forget the fact that Tiny was like, two feet taller than everyone her dad, it was the names that mattered. "I get to work here 'cause..."

Uh. She was a little hazy on that part, actually.

"'Cause I have a nametag, see?" Best logic ever.

"That. Is cool." Kenzi nodded definitely, and sat down again, trying to figure out what she could make a nametag for. "He's not Tiny. Someone was being silly when they named him," she added. "I like it here, I'm staying." On the island. Although the bar was looking good too!

"I like it here too." Bo nodded and jumped back down to get the stuff that Tiny didn't have to go to Turtle & Canary to buy.

"I'd miss my mom and dad if I stayed forever, though." She said it with a shrug, since the thought of staying anywhere without them was as silly as... well, Tiny's name. "But they could come here and stay too. That'd be perfect!"

"I wouldn't," Kenzi said definitely. "But he's not my real dad. He's my Stepfather." She stuck out her tongue. "But Aunt Ludmilla and Aunt Lena can come to visit. Just visit."

Bo knew what a step-parent was, thanks to kids in her class, but the way it had been explained to her was a little tilted towards the rosy side of things. Her entire view of family was a little tilted towards... yeah.

"Why wouldn't you miss him? Step-dads are real dads, just like adopted ones. Just 'cause they're not your born family doesn't mean they don't love you."

"'Cause he doesn't like me. I'm loud and I talk too much and I don't stay still and I'm not respectful." Kenzi didn't care. Well. That's what she said a lot. "And I laugh too loud and he thinks I'm stupid. He's mean. I don't know why Mom likes him." She shook her head. "I'm running away to here forever." She tilted her head at Bo. "You're lucky."

"You can't live by yourself," Bo said, aghast (though she could neither spell nor define that word). If you told it to her and asked her to make up a definition, though, it would be the way you feel when somebody tells you their dad doesn't like them 'cause they LAUGH TOO LOUD. "Kids have to have a family."

"I have family! I have cousins. And aunts. I was gonna run away to them until I was here. They'd let me stay." At least for a while. "But here is better. Nobody could tell on me to my Stepfather here. And I can laugh and dance and dress up how I want and the nice man at the coffee place gave me ten dollars! See?" It was a heaven of softies! And possible suckers!

Bo shook her head, though her eyes widened at the thought of ten whole dollars, which she'd only ever got in Christmas cards from Grandma Dennis, and even that went into her mom's purse for safekeeping until they could go toy-shopping with it.

"You got to have a mom and dad. Kids deserve a mom and dad who love them." Guess whose parents read waaaay too many books about how to make your adopted child feel wanted and accepted?

"Maybe," Kenzi looked down at the ten, and folded it really careful. Her mom liked Stepfather better than her, maybe. Or she wouldn't still be with him. "But I don't want to go to foster care. They put you in with lots of kids and make you work and you're not really theirs." She shook her head decisively. "I'm almost ten! And I'm real smart. I can take care of myself."

"That's old--" To a seven year old. "But you still need a family to live with. Heck, Mom says Daddy wouldn't be able to take care of himself if she wasn't around and he's a grown-up."

Oh. Oh! Oh, duh!

"I know what to do!"

"What?" Kenzi asked, wary. If there was any mention of policemen, she was outta there.

"I'll adopt you! Then you can be my sister and come live with us!"

She'd stopped asking for a sister once they'd explained the whole thing to her, since part of that explanation had included 'It costs a lot of money to adopt a new baby, honey' but this was perfect. This one wouldn't be a baby, and she'd be free!
