Homecoming Dance | Town Hall | Saturday Evening | Post I

Oct 22, 2011 07:14

Glitter encrusted moosen stood guard in the entry to the transformed Town Hall, reminding all those in attendance that the night was about all things Canadian. Or things the Student Council had deemed Canadian - plus a whole lot of glitter ( Read more... )

Anyone was free to run from the glitter, but they certainly couldn't hide! Luckily, the shadowy corners were also where the council members had hidden away some handi-wipe dispensers.

Ender wasn't trying to hide from anyone - he just never really got that hungry. Added to that was that the corners were nice and quiet and he could observe the others - especially Peter - from a distance, and he was fine here, really.

"Ah, look who's lurking around in the background," Peter said, grinning as he came up to Ender. "Come on, little brother, the punch isn't spiked yet."

"I think I'll stick with my water," Ender said dryly. "I doubt it'll be long."

"Your loss."

Peter took a swig of his punch, then went right back to grinning, like he wasn't here because he was pretty sure Ender was the only person in the room really worth talking to.

Not that he thought so. Perish the thought.

"I'm surprised you trotted out the military ensemble," he observed. "This isn't an IF function." He figured Ender was using it to remind everybody that he wasn't like them - Peter certainly would have, if they'd let him into Battle School.

"No, but I'm here on the IF's dime," Ender said. "My rank doesn't mean much, but I'm still military. And I'm sure you've noticed so far that there are more people here who aren't ordinary civilians than there are ordinary civilians."

So looking normal was a grand way to look like an outsider; Ender knew Karla and Ben certainly treated people of 'ordinary' backgrounds differently.

Peter couldn't help but wonder if Ender was trying to throw him in with the 'ordinary civilians'. He had to resist the urge to look annoyed.

"Right, right, not a lot of ordinary folk," he drawled. "Well, I guess some people have to look privileged by comparison, right?" He made a big sweeping gesture with his arm. "At least, that's the general feeling I get."

"Some people are, from a certain point of view," Ender said, glancing at Peter. "I prefer not to think of it that way. I don't think there's anyone here who isn't worthwhile in one way or another-- playing let's-compare doesn't help anybody." He looked back at the crowd. "It's just that the social make-up of the island is different, almost lopsided, and so the pressures must follow."

Peter snorted, and nudged Ender's shoulder with his. "Hell is other people," he said. "This isn't news."

Ender didn't respond to the shoulder bump at all, but the quote got a small chuckle out of him. "Sartre never meant that literally," he said. "And it's a good thing he didn't, because if it were true at all, then we as a species might as well give up and lie down in trenches, waiting to be mauled."

The whole conversation turned into a philosophical debate at that point - and after a while, both of them almost relaxed.

Cassel had immediately slid into one of the shadowy corners as soon as he arrived. He didn't mind the whole dance scene (it was the one place where he and his gloves fit in) but to the side was where he was most comfortable.

On his way back to the food end of the room, Peter spotted a vaguely familiar face-- Oh, right. Glove Boy from the picnic.

He changed his course subtly and put on his best 'nice guy' face. He was here to work the room, after all. "Hey," shit, what was his name? Something with a-- "Cassel," he said, smoothly. "Haven't seen you around in a while."

Cassel was just lucky Peter hadn't called him Glove Boy out loud.

"I like to keep my public appearances down to a minimum," he said. "Adds an air of mystery to me."

He said it in a joking manner but it did have quite a bit of truth to it.

"Mission accomplished," Peter said with a snort. "So what have you been up to? Besides getting the usual Fandom trauma treatment, because I don't think that one's optional."

Cassel gave a slight shrug, not wanting to admit he hadn't been doing much of anything aside from enjoying being away from his family. "Managed to avoid doing any work during Fall Break. There really wasn't much incentive for me to help out Canadians in need."

"Not really a charity worker?" Peter guessed. "Well, everyone has their way of pitching in. Doesn't have to be all bleeding hearts and throbbing thumbs, right?"
