The Devil's Nest: Saturday, 9/10

Sep 10, 2011 14:14

You'd think that Deb's first stop -- after crawling out of a plane crash with only a shoulderbag, a disheveled flight attendant uniform, a head wound and a vague woozy feeling that Deb was a really stupid name, despite the fact that she was wearing it pinned to her chest -- would have been a hospital, but no ( Read more... )

"Unless your plane crashed and you have partial amnesia and you're so starved for a cigarette you'd offer oral satisfaction to the entire board of directors at Phillip Morris for a pack of menthol lights, you do not know the day I 'haf' and you can find your own damn booze!" Deb clutched the bag tightly to her bosom.

"...Unless you happen to have a pack of menthol lights?"

"No, but I can get zem?" Please, black market trading was in her blood. "Vait here."

*commercial* : "Want the cool rich taste of tobacco on your tongue, but too tired to smoke? Try Nicotine Lozenges! They'll give you the rush of the smoke, without the effort of lighting up. N-L Spells NAIL!"

Kenzi was back. Looking vaguely disheveled. "I have cigarettes! Gimme booze!"

Look, it's Menthol Lights! Ignore that wig. Sometimes you did odd things to get the cig.

Tinkling bottles rolled uber-dramatically across the bar-top as Deb scrabbled for the cigarettes like it was 1985 and they were the last Cabbage Patch Kid in the Toys Backwards-R Us. "Oh god oh god oh god oh... WAIT GIMME THAT BACK!"

She didn't want the bottles. Just the lighter in the bottom of the bag.

Kenzi had little bottles of booze between all her fingers now, and froze as the Crazy Lady Got Crazier. "Vhat? I gave you cigs! We are even-steven!?"

"Lighter. NEED LIGHTER!" Her English was suddenly almost as bad as that of this highly-suspicious-sounding-semi-Russian-probably-KGB-agent-in-disguise-why-would-Deb-know-something-like-that-and-damn-Deb-was-a-stupid-name, and Deb didn't care one damn bit. LIGHTER!

Kenzi threw the lighter at her, dropping a few bottles in the process but getting them back within seconds. They teach you that crap in Charm School.

Why would Deb recognize that move? No reason at all!

"You are addict, lady," Kenzi said, the accent veering back to Russian again. "Isss sad. Corrupt decadent Western flying icon of a bourgouise baguette. Tank you for ze booze."

Deb -- well, "Deb" -- caught the lighter like she'd been trained to catch high-impact explosives or something. "Whatever whatever whatever light light light WHY WON'T YOU FREAKING LIGHT!!1!"

She shoved a bar napkin into the sparks the thing was giving off until it flamed up into a torch in her hand. Then, you know, tossed that on the counter so it didn't melt her polyester uniform jacket onto her flesh.

Leaning over with a cigarette in her mouth to light it off a flaming bartop was the sweetest moment of her entire life.

That she could remember.

"Ahhhhhhhhhhhh."

Kenzi watched the napkin light up parts of the spilled booze, and merrily make its way down the bar top, with interest. Shiiiiiny fire! Also, was Deb a possible asset?

"You vant job, ozzer than this? I get you more cigarettes!"

"Who do you need me to kill?" She was both totally serious and...reasonably sane. She did this kind of thing for a living, after all. Usually for people without accents, but you learn to be flexible.

Taking another puff while she waited for the answer, she looked down and ripped the badge off her uniform with a satisfaction only slightly less obscene than the one she was currently getting from the nicotine. "God, what a stupid name."

Kenzi cackled, pleased. "Ve find someone. Maybe Tony Stark. He is thorn in my side, stupid man. Maybe someone else. Vhy wear stupid nametag? You are on the run, yes, no?" And she tipped up one of the teeny bottles and drained it dry.

No-longer-Deb shook her head, which made the injury from the wreck throb at her. The room swam for a moment, and she could hear herself saying chicken or fish? CHICKEN OR FISH?, and she could hear someone else, someone male and middle aged and wearing a very expensive suit, saying The assignment's simple: watch the passengers, and don't let anybody steal the cargo.

"Undercover," she said slowly, then, "Think that job got blown when the plane did, though." Whatever the cargo was, it probably hadn't survived the crash... right?

"Ahhh. It happens," Kenzi said, sucking back more vodka in a philosophical Russian way. "So you look for vork, good. I find you some, da. I am entrepreneur!" Now. Of course, she'd been other things in the past.

Cargo? Illicit cargo? And then... "Why vas plane blown? This will not be problem here, nyet?"

"Naaaah." She so had no idea. She couldn't even remember what the cargo was, let alone who might want it and what they might do to get it. "Everybody's dead except me and the real stewardess, anyway."

"That is ... conveeeeenient." Convenient for what? Who the hell knew? It could be a good salvage operation! "Vhere you say this plane crash? ON other side of island, vhere?" Very sneaky.
