Sometimes, Alex let current events write the syllabus for her. Granted, these were 2011 current events, and the island wasn't in 2011, but she wasn't about to let that stop her.

Dani was drinking hot tea as if it was water on a hot day. Then again, she desperately needed to warm up after traveling through unseasonably cold weather to get here.

Does the government have a right to say who should and shouldn't get married? Based on what criteria? Age? Gender? Previous or current marriage status? Religion? Citizenship? Species? Race? Consent? Blood alcohol level at the time the marriage takes place? Number of people wishing to marry? What about relatives -- how close is too close, and how far out is okay again?

Well, what about transgendered individuals? If marriage is only to the opposite gender, are they stuck with their birth sex's opposing gender, or their transitioning sex's opposing gender, assuming that they choose to (and are able to) fully transition at all?

And polygamy? Does marriage lose its meaning if we open it to three people, in a stable relationship? What about five, or ten? Twenty? Three hundred?
