Not having enough money to buy chocolates was one thing; realizing that you had no idea how to get home was another thing entirely, and poor Charlie Bucket put thoughts of sweets out of his mind as he tried to figure out where he was. He was wandering the streets and was just about to deem the whole thing pointless when he saw a monkey and bear toddling down the street as well.
A monkey and a bear definitely caused pause, and Charlie tilted his head, wondering if this was a hallucination from not having anything to eat but cabbage for weeks.
Paddington paused as he noticed the young boy that was looking at them, and then decided that the proper thing to do would be to lift his hat in greeting.
"Good afternoon," he called. "I don't suppose you would know where we might find some marmalade?"
Marmalade. Charlie held his stomach as it rumbled hungrily, but, really, the bear was now talking to him and tipping his hat, and that was enough to distract him from that at the moment. He grinned a little. Even if it was a hallucination, it would be poor manners to ignore the bear's politeness.
"Good afternoon," Charlie responded; he did not have a hat to lift, but he pretend to lift one all the same and offer a nod of his head. "I'm sorry, but I don't think I do. Maybe they'll have some at the sweets shoppe. I'm just coming back from there myself."
George's eyes lit up excitedly, and he began pointing. Where? Where? A sweets shoppe? Which one? Could the boy point to it?
Oh! Oh, a store full of sweets! He liked sweets very much, even if he ate until they gave him a sore belly. The Man in the Yellow Hat scolded him for that, but gently.
Rude stood on the corner and watched them closely. Not because it was adorable, just because he wanted to keep an eye on anything strange going on. Shut up.
A monkey in an oversized canary-yellow sombrero toddled over to the very big man in the dark suit. He tugged on the pant leg and tried to catch the man's eyes -- oh! Oh, he had shiny eye-things! Oh! Oh, could he see those? Please? Please? Please?

Paddington was nothing if not to the point.

Sweets were almost as good as bananas. (Almost.)
