Your bartender was very much herself today, thank you -- though somewhat confused by the fact that the door was unmanned, Tiny was nowhere to be seen, and there was a guy who looked like Russell Brand playing the ukelele in the DJ booth.

If only Bo had been on the island long enough to recognize One Of Those Nights before it was happening around

"Because God hates me?" Bo went with this time, as she turned to grab a tumbler for his no-wine spritzer.

"There seems to be a lot of that going around," Jack grumbled. "I suppose I'm luckier than you are on this score. I can go home sooner."

"On the other hand," Bo said, topping the drink off with a slice of lime and handing it over, "at least I'm getting paid to be here."

"So the advantage is yours," Jack decided, flashing a quick smile as he sipped at the drink. "How are you? Any clowns, or is this a standard island weekend so far?"

If he'd talked to Kate, he would have known the answer already.

"No clowns, unless you count the new musical act. And the bouncer seems to have gone AWOL. Other than that, it's been pretty quiet. How about you?"

"All quiet from what I can tell," Jack nodded. "It's nice. I had a miserable trip home this week, so this balances that out. Even with the ukelele artist."

"Bad family reunion?" Home was kind of a theoretical concept for Bo, these days, but when she was a kid, she'd been dragged to a few of those and met a few people she was glad she was only related to by adoption.

"No, but a strangely apt guess," Jack said thoughtfully. In some bizarre way, David was like a stepbrother, and "reunion" had certainly been on the menu...

"It's a long story," he added. "The short version would be that I work with a private detective at home, we were trying to solve some murders, and the police got the wrong man. It was a rather spectacular failure."

"So that that incredibly boring life of yours is pretty much wishful thinking, huh?"

Not without sympathy. Not without sympathy at all. She'd tried to live a boring life for a few weeks with poor, senile Gerry not all that long ago. It was.... a rather spectacular failure, in the end.

"Pretty much nonexistent," Jack agreed. "I keep hoping, though. Maybe someday I'll retire and -- knit, or something. Watch television."

"You could do both; my mom managed it. Though if things got really exciting on her show, she tended to drop stitches."
