Uhura carefully straightened the hat display in the window. It was her first day at work, at her first real job. She put on her best outfit that morning- a straight skirt in a pale tan, with a smart red-and-orange print blouse. She felt like such a grown up

Ben was in the middle of his daily run through town when he recognized a familiar face.

"Hi!" he said, poking his head into the shop.

"Hi Ben!" Uhura waved. "I didn't know you ran."

He smiled a little ruefully. "I get chased a lot at home. It's better to be in shape." His eyes took in the shop. "I have to admit that I've never been in this store before."

"I agree, it's better to be in shape. I was on the track team back home. Sprinting mostly." Uhura gestured at the hats. "Come in, if you've got a minute."

Oz randomly decided he wanted a cowboy hat. Really the idea just popped into his head as he was walking by.

"Hey." he greeted Uhura.

"Hi! Welcome to the Imperial Brim. I'm Uhura. How can I help you today?" Uhura said cheerfully.

"Good to meet you, I'm Oz. Got any cowboy hats?"

"Let's take a look." Uhura walked to a stand covered in a variety of hats. "Let's see, we've got fedoras, Panama hats, and here we go: cowboy hats!" She picked up a dove grey one and held it out.

The door to the shop opened seemingly by itself. "Kiss kiss?" Karla's disembodied voice called. "Invisible female on her way in. Please don't shriek or fling things at me."

Uhura jumped and dropped the hat she was brushing. She thought she recognized the voice. "K-Karla? Why are you invisible?" She looked around, trying to pin point where the other girl was.

"Teensy, tiny, practically insignificant problem at the Magic Reserves meeting," Karla said. "Spell went awry...just happened to turn anyone with magic invisible. We'll have it fixed in just a little bit."

Reassurance: not her gift.

"But things you put on after you turned invisible stay visible," she explained, pulling a beret on to demonstrate. The beret ghosted through the air, suspended by nothing. "So I figured I should pick up a new hat today. At least until we figure out how to reverse the spell."

"Oh-h, okay. Well, we do have lots of hats." Uhura gestured around. "How does magic just go awry?"

Uhura looked a little worried.

[You saw nothing. Lalalala!]

Irulan entered the Imperial Brim and smiled, "Hello, Miss Uhura, how are you finding your first day?"

"Hello, Irulan!" Uhura smiled brightly. "My first day seems to be going well. Although, I do need to practice guessing the size of people's heads. How are you today?"
