Café Fina, Monday

May 03, 2010 16:43

It was that sort of day today, over at Cafe Fina.

You know the type.

After all, in a restaurant staffed primarily by animate dishes, days like this were rather an inevitability. It was the sort of day that saw the staff doing what they do best, and attempting to teach Zack to do the same.

For those of you who would like a fantastic meal without being bounced at by the puppy.

Be bounced at by the Pepper Shaker, instead.

After a frantic search of her closet -- after choosing and discarding dress after dress after dress, and worrying about her shoes, and her hair -- Elena had had an epiphany.

She was overthinking this.

It was dinner, with Tseng. She was not going to be a spaz and ruin it. She was not going to hyperventilate and put her head between her knees. She was going to take a deep breath, pick a dress, and wear it. It was not going to be too long, too short, too formal, too casual, too young, or too old: it was going to be a dress, and she was going to wear it so she didn't show up naked.

Thinking about showing up naked: not helping her nerves.

Look! A dress. It was blue and light and fun. It was comfortable and she liked it. That meant she was going to wear the damn thing and stop having a nuclear meltdown over clothing.

And so Elena was waiting, now. Not naked. In a swingy blue dress. Hair clipped back from her face. Minimal make-up. She was not going to try too hard. She was going to have dinner.

She could do this. Right?

By some crazy random happenstance, Elena and Tseng's dinner date just so happened to take place at the same time as Zack's break. Which wasn't to say that Zack wasn't there, no. It simply meant that the dishes had plenty of time to recognize Elena as one of Zack's friends, realize that she was there waiting for somebody, and then tie him up and gag him in the kitchen distract him with cake elsewhere before Tseng could show up.

And there was Tseng, now. In, of course, his suit, oblivious as to how kind the island really was to him at times as a particularly helpful Spatula showed him to his seat.

"Elena," he greeted, in a tone that suggested that he was working very hard on not thinking about the Spatula. Really.

"Tseng," she said, offering him a quick smile. And her hand, if he wanted to take it. Just to shake. It seemed properly date-like. "I should have warned you about the service, here."

She hoped the dishes would not overhear and think that she meant they were bad at their jobs.

"It's odd how quickly you get used to the little ... oddities around here."

She no longer thought it was weird, being served by oversized dishes and salt-and-pepper shakers. This island had the weirdest effect on people ...
