In case you need a more private moment.

"I told ye," George said dryly, shrugging.

Mithros, how she wished she didn't believe him now.

She blinked, trying to get her brain to work. "You're..." No, she couldn't say it.

"Not sayin' it don't make it not true," George pointed out wryly, picking up a piece of bacon off his plate and offering it to Pounce.

Pounce accepted the bacon with a manh of thanks.

Beka watched them, a little sick to her stomach. "Tis cracked. I'm a Dog, I've naught to offer a babe. Let alone raise one on my own."

"An' that's why I didn't tell ye," George said, looking up at her. "I don' know when or why or anything like that. Mayhap ye don't raise the babe on your own? Tisn' much point in worryin' about it now."

Says the boy who didn't get his brain broken this weekend.

She wasn't certain if she believed him now, but she didn't want to know that part. She didn't want to know.

"No, it'd not change aught," she said quietly. Her shoulders jerked and she grimaced afore she took a step forward, warily reaching up to touch her fingers to his cheek.

George bit his lip, not moving away but reaching up to touch the back of her hand with his fingers. "I'm sorry, Beka," he said finally. "I - didn't mean to mislead you."

She nodded and her eyes swept over his face, looking for sommat. Mayhap a resemblance to Nilo or Willes. She didn't remember her father's face.

She didn't know what she was seeing. She quickly kissed his cheek before pulling back to slip past him.

George watched her go, totally unsure of what she was doing or thinking or - anything.

He looked down at Pounce then sat down to offer him another piece of bacon. "She's pretty mad, huh."

You'd have felt it if she was mad, Pounce told him. He wasn't about to turn down the bacon and he gobbled it down.

"Not that kinda mad," he said, making a face. He reached to pet Faithful a bit tentatively. "You should go make sure she's okay."

Pounce looked up past George, in the direction where Beka had disappeared. She'll be fine, she found Emma, he said and he turned his gaze back to George. That was an interesting secret to carry, young one.

George's eyes widened. Emma not being happy with him was worrying. She could be dangerous.

He shrugged though. "Aye, but - I didn' want her worrit about her future. I mean, look at Ben an' Jaina an' them. They all know different bits of their future, an' none of 'em seem t'like it."

She doesn't like it, Pounce agreed, but you knew she'd figure it out in the end. Now you see why your noble was lying.

"She's not my noble!" George squeaked. "An' if she wasn't so bad at it, Beka wouldn've figured it out! Or I'd've tol' her eventually."

Maybe.

"Th' redheaded lass still isn't my noble," he said, almost pouting.
