The calls had started early in the morning, and the patients had followed shortly after, all with the same problem - people had fallen asleep and couldn't be woken up. Edmund had been redirected on his way to the clinic with a sleeping Jo Harvelle in his arms. His arms were burning by this time and he looked around for somewhere to set her down.

Veronica showed up at Town Hall after hearing Cable's broadcast and looked for someone to talk to about what she had been experiencing.

She was glad she had stayed awake so far.

Martha never imagined she'd be grateful to see people who were simply awake, but it was getting to be that way. "Hi there," she said, still managing a smile. "Can I help you?"
