Seregil had been out exploring the town -- always know your surroundings as best you could -- and stopped at JGOB on the way back, lured by the sweets on display.

After some discussion with the shopkeeper, he ended up with a cup of something called hot chocolate and a pastry that had more of this chocolate along with lots of sweet cream.

He smiled at the girl who was drinking something similar. "Are you a student at the school?"

"Television," Seregil said. "I saw television last night. It's an amazing device."

"Well, fridges and microwaves are very important." They were to her, anyway. "Fridges, and freezers, are what food's kept in, the fridge keeps it cold and the freezer, well, it freezes things. You can use a microwave to thaw it, cook it or reheat it. The fridges are the big white, they look like cupboards, in the kitchens, and microwaves are smaller boxes on the counter. Anyone who's around will be able to show you how to use one." Unless they were from a dimension with no electricity. "Almost anyone."

The words for the devices were strange but their purpose at least was familiar. "I will keep that in mind."

"Good." Coraline nodded at him. "It's your turn to ask a question."

"What would you say is the strangest thing you know of?" Seregil asked after a moment's thought.

That was a good question. She pondered it, trying to make a decision about levels of strangeness. "I think, places that aren't places, but are something else entirely."

Seregil tilted his head to the side. "That sounds like there's an interesting story behind it."

"There is," she replied, and smiled. "But it's my turn to ask a question. How do you travel from your dimension to this one?"

Seregil grimaced. "Magic portal. Which for most people isn't that big a deal. For me..."

Coraline looked at him sympathetically. "Was it very hard on you?"

She'd only been through one magic portal, of sorts, and it had been very difficult indeed.

"I get a sort of... It's like travel sickness. Except with magic," Seregil explained. "I spent a good half hour throwing up after I went through the portal."

Coraline thought that sounded perfectly horrid. "There's pills you can get that help with travel sickness," she told him. "Actually, there's lots of medicine here that you're probably not used to, but those might help you with the portal sickness."

"I don't know," Seregil said. "The Drasnians back home weren't able to do anything about the way I react to magic. Or magic reacts to me."
