Deep in the preserve, there was a small dell sheltered from the rough sea breezes by tall, old trees. The forest animals knew of this place, and squirrels and birds had constructed elaborate nests here that were revisited every year.
The animals rarely paid attention to the ground cover though. It wasn't good eating, but years of fallen leaves enriched the soil and provided the perfect place for the abundance of herbs growing untouched by human hands for centuries.
