Karal leaned forward over Trenor's neck, urging him faster, and they flashed down the beach, sand flying up from his hooves. This was perfect, there was nothing but the feel of his horse under him and the wind whipping through his hair as Trenor gathered himself and sailed over a driftwood log.
Gradually, they slowed, moving down the beach to splash through the surf, and Trenor dropped his head to snort at the water. Karal patted his neck, trying very hard not to think about how long Altra had been gone.
It had been two weeks. Karal had faith Vkandis would send the Firecat back to him, but he was beginning to wonder if something had happened and he couldn't get back.
It was an uncomfortable thought.
Trenor chose that moment to paw the water, splashing Karal's feet, and he shook his head. "Very well, no worrying," he told the horse and Trenor flicked his ears back. "But I pray he returns soon."
