... I'm confused at how you wound up considering yourself a Star Trek fan in the first place. I mean sure, a fan can dislike parts of their fandom (and I myself never finished watching Enterprise), but I always thought that liking some things was sort of, er, necessary?
If you like anything Trek, you're a Trek fan, plain and simple. I HATE Ds9, Voyager, most of Enterprise, but LOVE TNG, TOS, and can tolerate the movies. I still consider myself a Trekkie, though. You're still a fan OF Trek, just not a fan of ALL PARTS of Trek. It's not a contest, just enjoy being a fan and love what you love.
Huh, I like Voyager and the one with Captain Picard (is that TNG or Enterprise? I don't even know, I just know that I like it), but I never considered myself a Trek fan, much less a Trekkie.
I always thought that Trekkies hated Voyager, possibly Ds9, and the reboot. And maybe some of the movies? But overall they still knew everything (or at least a lot of things) there was to know about the ST universe. But maybe that's just the impression I got from the few Trekkies I have come across. Saying I'm a fan of Voyager after they told me they were Star Trek fans always got me a less than warm response. :(
I usually don't say this, but: sounds like you just met some very unpleasant fans.
Star Trek fans are Trekkies. That's really pretty much it. There was some discussion about how it wasn't 'serious' enough and it should be 'Trekker' instead etc, but that definition is pretty much the one most people accept.
So it doesn't matter which ST shows or movies you like, or how big of a fan you are.
Backing up the commenter above me, but it sounds like you just ran into some fans who were jerks. I know plenty of Trekkies who love Voyager (and DS9 and the Reboot), and plenty who don't. Anyone who tries to tell you that you have to have encyclopedic knowledge of the ST universe to call yourself a fan is an elitist ass. If you like any part of the canon and consider yourself a fan, then you can call yourself a Trekkie. ;)
OMG... Someone who actually likes Voyager! I was starting to think I was the only one!! T_T
(and as for OP, at least you like some of the movies, which Trek fans actually agree with. Try only having really watched limited DS9 and TNG, and being really obsessed over Voyager, and claiming Voyager is your favourite... I'm like the bane of the Trekkies)
This. Most of the fans I've met are solely fans of TOS or are solely fans of Next Generation or so on. In fact, it's quite easy to find Star Trek fans who aren't fans of every (or even most) Star Trek media that exists.
I don't like TNG and haven't watched most of DS9, but I'm definitely still a Trekkie.
If you couldn't be a Trekkie without liking all of or even most of the series, there wouldn't be very many Trekkies at all. And I think you get a free pass to dislike TAS (Animated Series), Enterprise, Voyager in some circles, and a significant chunk of the movies.
I really hope one of the movies you like is IV: Voyage Home, AKA The One With The Whales; from what I've seen you can say you like that one and pretty much everyone agrees.
*ahem* Grew up watching ST:NG with the family, then DS9 (love), and classic Trek, and all the movies. Didn't watch much of Voyager, didn't watch Enterprise.
Oh my goodness, I just realized this is how I feel about Star Trek too; I liked the first film (yes, I really did; I saw it as a kid knowing next to nothing about Star Trek and thought the film was just beautiful) and Wrath of Khan is one of my favorite films of all time, but everything else is just there. (I've never considered myself any kind of true Trek fan, though, unlike OP. I still respect Trek for paving the way for everything, though.)
don't worry. i loved the first movie too. didn't even realize it was hated until i got into fandom. i get that it's a slow movie, but screw it, i loved it and i loved that it felt like an overly long episode of ToS.
Yes, and if you don't know anything about Star Trek going in, it has a 2001: A Space Odyssey feel to it, which still remains my measuring stick for Science Fiction films of the "deep thought" variety.
