'Well No One Else Will Have Me'
She stood on the platform, leaning against the metal railing and watched as he walked in circles around the steel gurney. Stopping every few steps to examine one aspect or another of their most recent Alien cadaver. Nervously she tapped her fingers against the rail in time with each of his steps, stopping only when the ring on her left hand suddenly caught her attention, it's simple 'rock' shimmering against the overhead lights - she's more than a little surprised to realise that she'd actually forgotten it was there, the white gold band still feeling unfamiliar against her normally bare fingers.
It was a clear reminder of why she's standing there in the first place.
"Guess what! I'm engaged" she said hoping the 'enthusiasm' she'd been practising all morning didn't sound as forced, aloud as she thought it did. When he didn't answer, simply continued making his way around the body, she tried again.
"I said I'm engaged"
"Yeah, I heard you the first time" he snapped still not bothering to look up.
"Well say something then" She attempted a smile that felt as forced as the 'enthusiasm' that had now suddenly dissipated.
"Like what?" he asked finally looking up at her "Congratulations? Nice one Gwen?-"
"-How about you're an idiot?" he snapped his rubber gloves off. "-Getting engaged won't change anything. Going home to a big house and 2.4 kids won't stop the Aliens from trying to kill you" He tossed the rubber gloves into the waste basket as her lower lip quivered, thousands of comeback lines streaming through her head but none of them willing to pass her lips.
"-and most of all-" he continued, this time ensuring he was making eye contact "-It won't bring back the fire and passion when you're making love to a man who doesn't even know you anymore." Slowly he walked up the ramp and came to stand besides her. "You said it yourself, people out there in the real world don't understand the things we go through everyday. He'll never understand"
"I can't believe you're actually jealous" she scoffed, eyes growing wide as she refused to turn to face him. She didn't want to give him the satisfaction of proving her wrong.
"What? I'm jealous of you having to live a lie for the rest of your life? Oh please, give me a break!" She could feel the faintest tickle of his breath against her cheek.
"You went off with Diane, Owen. What else was I supposed to do? Sit around and be miserable for the rest of my life? Or try and patch together the only thing I'd got left going for me?"
"We were never miserable-" he whispered, taking in a deep breath "-but you will be. After all we both know you're only marrying him because you think nobody else will be stupid enough to have you. Just remember you were the one who walked away in the first place Gwen, so eager for that slice of boring normality" and that's what she did now, turned on her heels and marched towards the exit, grabbing her coat along the way before anybody could notice the tears.
The End
