5th Floor Common Room, Monday Afternoon

Jan 11, 2016 09:39

Kathy had been responsible all morning, finishing up the last of her college applications before running off to class. So it wasn't until she got home and logged onto the net that she finally saw the news.

Oh. Oh damn. There seemed to really be only one thing to do, once she'd gotten past the point of just staring at the screen and willing them to ( Read more... )

Laura was going to head straight to her bed to sulk like a champ, but she sniffed Kathy upstairs and decided to pay a visit. Friends did that, right?

Poking her head in, her attention was temporarily diverted to the television. It was a somewhat familiar sight, but Laura had never been a big movie watched. "What are you watching?" Laura said as she went on to sit next to Kathy, eyes still on the screen.

"Hey," Kathy said, glancing over to give Laura a wan smile. "You've never seen this movie? One of the best fantasy flicks from the 80s. Directed by Jim Hension, produced by George Lucas, designed by Brian Froud...in the 80s, you couldn't do better than those three if you wanted a genre movie."

Granted the movie had barely made half of its budget back at the box office, but it wasn't Kathy's fault people had been stupid in the 80s.

"We're not all that far in if you want to watch it with me?" Kathy offered. "I can catch you up to speed."

"I have seen very few movies", Laura admitted as she got comfortable on the couch. Movie nights with the other X teens had never been her cup of tea. So Laura listened with interest, as she did know the names of the people she was talking about, kinda.

"Sure", she said, eyes going back to the screen. It wasn't what she had had in mind but it would help her relax anyway. "What is it about?"

"Every older sister's dream and worst nightmare combined?" Kathy said with a wry laugh. "So, this girl--" She nodded at the TV where the main character was running down a featureless hallway. "--was stuck baby-sitting her baby brother who kept constantly crying. Annoyed, she wished that goblins would come and take him away--and then they do. Except, of course, she hadn't really wanted him to be kidnapped, hadn't even realized that that would work, and so made a deal with the goblin king to get her brother back. She's in a giant maze that she has to solve in a limited amount of time or her brother will turn into a goblin and stay in the Goblin Kingdom forever."

Her laugh was less wry and more open this time. "I got grounded for a week once because my little sister tattled to our parents that I kept trying to trade her to the Goblin King."

Hanna had overslept; she had no classes on Monday, and hadn't felt well enough to go to work. So she was still in her pajamas when she entered the common room, following the sound of music.

Not that Sound of Music.

"What are we watching?" she asked Kathy, curious.

"Hanna, hi!" Kathy said, bouncing up to give her a hug. "You're not a reindeer anymore, hi!"

Startling powers of observation there, Kathy. Good job.

"One of my favorite movies, actually. Came out in the 80s, which was an amazing decade for fantasy flicks." Kathy loved her some cheesy 80s fantasy, along with cheesy 90s horror and early-aught cheesy scifi. "Watch it with us?"

"Yes, of course," Hanna said, taking a drink out of the refrigerator and settling onto the couch. "So it is old. Would I know anyone who is in it?" Then she paused and laughed, the reindeer comment settling in. "No, I am not, thank everything."

"David Bowie?" Kathy checked, because, well, there was a reason she was watching it today of all days. "Jennifer Connolly? And it was directed by Jim Henson and produced by George Lucas. Those are probably the biggest names of the film."
