4th floor common room: wednesday afternoon

May 07, 2014 12:09

The kitchen in the common room wasn't that different from the kitchen in Celia's cottage. Everything was a little more modern and clean but other than that, Nathan recognized almost everything. The common room kitchen reminded him of Gabriel's kitchen more than anything else. His friend had spent a lot of time in there, cooking food and letting ( Read more... )

"Is that warm food I smell?"

A rhetorical question, of course, but Edward was determined to lead in with a merry disposition - to heighten his chances of getting some of that soup.

"If I do it right, it should be," Nathan said, glancing back over his shoulder at Edward. "I haven't cooked anything in awhile. Might be some trial and error involved."

But hopefully not because he really didn't want to have to make a second batch of soup when he was already hungry.

"Ah, as long as you don't toss something poisonous in, I'm sure it'll be all right." Well, not entirely; Edward was actually a fair bit pickier than that when he had the chance, but he hadn't had the chance much in his life. "You cook a lot?"

"I used to, yeah," he said, nodding and dropping some salt into the pot of soup he had going. Nathan picked up the wooden spoon he'd found and gave the soup a stir. "Nothing too extravagant, though. We never had anything but meats and vegetables so what I know is mostly centered on those things."

The smell of food reached Ichabod's nostrils as he returned to his room from a walk. Stopping by the common room he saw a boy cooking. While he now could boil water for tea, thanks to miss Bowen, he had never had to do any kind of cooking for himself, and even if he had known how to, he wouldn't have felt brave enough in this exotic kitchen.

"That smells delicious," he said. "Even if there is something strange about a kitchen without fire anywhere."

"Thanks," Nathan said, looking over his shoulder and nodding once at Ichabod. "You're using to open flames?"

He'd been picking up on the time differences that people here seemed to be experiencing. Nathan didn't have the intelligence to really parse it but he could accept it for the moment.

"I am," Ichabod replied. "Not that I know much about the art of cooking anyway. I don't believe we have met. My name is Ichabod Crane."

"Nathan," he replied with a nod and a small smile. "I've used open flames before too. Cooking meat is a lot quicker that way, I've found. I don't think this place would understand if I started a fire in my room though so I could cook though."

Karina leaned in the doorway, having been on her way up to her room and been stopped by something smelling good.

"Is this a boys only party?" she asked, surveying the room and smiling. "Or can I come in too?"

Nathan glanced up and, as he tended to do with most girls, looked quickly away. He barely held eye contact with males let alone females. But, he found his words easy enough.

"You can come in," he said quietly, nodding. His attention wandered back to the soup to make sure everything was cooking correctly. "I think I'm making enough for the entire floor, if you're hungry."

A more insecure person would wonder if the quickly looking away thing had something to do with her. Karina cheerfully assumed it was something to do with him instead and sauntered on in.

"I could eat," she said cheerfully. "Though I'm actually from the fifth floor. I'm sneaky like that."

Not really, no.

"I'm Karina Lyle, by the way. And you're... new, right?"

In this instance, she was right because it had everything to do with him and his upbringing. He didn't tend to look at people or he hid behind sunglasses and lots and lots of layers.

"Yeah," he said, nodding. The soup started simmering so he let it be for a moment before glancing over at her though he kept his eyes down. "I'm Nathan. I live on this floor."

If that wasn't already evident and all.

Anders could tell Rapunzel's painting project was going to be beautiful when it was done ... but in the meantime the scent of the fresh paint was giving him a headache. He fled up a floor.

"Well," he said appreciatively, taking a deep sniff of the air, "that's much better-smelling than my roommate's paints. Is it for sharing?"

"Yes," Nathan replied, pleased he'd actually recognized that voice. It was sad that talking to people multiple times was a new sort of things for him. "I've made a lot more than originally planned and I think eating it all would make me sick. Which I've found isn't a fun thing."

Not at all.

"It isn't, and isn't that unfair?" Anders asked rhetorically. "There have been times when I wanted to eat all of something while I still had it, but doing that just kept me from enjoying any of it."

One could, of course, drink a potion for an upset stomach, but it was better not to have the upset stomach to begin with.

"And thank you," he added, claiming a bowl.

"I hope it's good," he said, reaching for a bowl of his own. "I haven't really done any cooking in awhile. I haven't had access to much more than an open flame and a few sticks."

He could cook meat but it hadn't always been that appetizing. "And I tended to use the open flame to keep warm. Heavy snow isn't great for cooking."

"Is there food?" Andros asked hopefully as he entered the common room. "Something smells really good."

Please feed the poor boy. He couldn't cook and didn't know what half the food was. Without a Synthetron he was lost.

"In a few minutes, there might be some edible soup," Nathan offered, glancing over. "If I've done everything right and haven't messed up in a kitchen I've never been in before."

"I'm sure it'll be great," Andros assured him. "Way better than anything I could do, anyway. Oh, I'm Andros," he added, because he was pretty sure they hadn't met, although, "I think you're in one of my classes?"

"Nathan," he returned with a nod. "And maybe? Are you in the mechanical class that we had yesterday?"

He hadn't paid that much attention to other people due to his fear that they'd been looking and laughing even if they hadn't been at all.
