Britta was not on the roof. It was a shocker, to be sure, and it had nothing to do with the fact that she was broke and totally out of both cigarettes and pot. She supposed she could go up and wait for someone and bum a smoke from them, but that seemed just pathetic

"Hey, Britta," Bruce said. He was stopping by the common room on his way back to the dorms after a long day working in the cave. He had a functioning rebreather now. He would never have to worry about knockout gas ever again.

... Not that he had to deal with that often.

"TV not cooperating?"

"I've never been to Denver," Bruce said. "I'm guessing it doesn't really compare?"

"Not by a long shot," Britta said emphatically. "You're not missing much, unless you like, I don't know, mountains and stuff."

"I spent part of last summer mountain climbing," Bruce said. "Probably still not the same, though."

"Depends," said Britta thoughtfully, "was it really mountain climbing with packs and ropes and everything, or did you get there via a ski lift?"

"No ropes. But it was in the Himalayas," Bruce said. "Is that good enough?"

Britta narrowed her eyes in deep consideration. "Yeah," she concluded, "I guess. Do you go mountain climbing a lot?"

"Not as much as I'd like," Bruce said. "That was a special vacation."

"Special how?"

[willbethenight]

"Special in that I had the time to go to the Himalayas," Bruce said.

And he trained with kung fu monks in a legendary city where time stood still.

"That's about it, though."

"Oh," Britta laughed a little. "I thought maybe, like, you know, to honor some pact made with someone on their death bed or something like that. That'd be pretty cool. Not that it isn't cool just going when you have the time, but, you know..."

That would have been cooler.

"Not to climb any mountains," Bruce said. "I did vow to be the best entrepreneur I can be for my city, though. That's probably not as exciting as climbing a mountain, though."
