Paranoid Parrot Campfire, Saturday Afternoon

Simon didn't mind the cold. Being a pale Englishman, he actually much preferred it to the summer heat he knew they should have been having on the island. And it wasn't just that: the cold also cleared his head. Which really needed clearing, after he'd spent half the day trying to calculate just how much slower time was going back where he was from ( Read more... )

"What's up, cabinmate?" Sam asked, greeting her with a brief wave. "Ventured out into the arctic tundra today?"

"No, mainland. But to get to the mainland I have to almost deal with arctic weather," she replied. "It worries me that I don't question how any of this is possible."

"Isn't that a good thing?" he asked, blowing into his hands to warm them up. "It either means you're adapting or you're desensitized."

Sam paused, considering that statement.

"I'm not sure which one's better out of those two, actually."

"This is what I'm saying," she smiled. "Cold already?"

"Yep," Sam said, not even trying to play masculine right now. "We don't get this kind of weather in Seattle. It rains, it's chilly, it rains some more and that's pretty much spring, summer, fall and winter."

Sam tilted his head and raised an eyebrow. "Gonna call me a wimp now? I might cry...which won't help the masculinity thing."

"And I don't want to make you cry," Annie said with a laugh. "I say since it's supposed to be warm and sunny, all bets are off. I mean, I'm cold, too."

"No one should want to make me cry because it's all gross and ugly and I get red faced and it's just not a pretty sight," Sam joked, shaking his head. "I think my mom almost gave me up for adoption because I cried hard enough to break mirrors once or twice. I had a tough childhood."

It hadn't been that tough. It was the adulthood that was tough.

"If you cry hard enough to break mirrors I think it counts as a superpower here," Annie noted casually.

"That's kind of a crappy superpower," Sam noted, making a face. "That's up there with shooting french fries out of your fingers or having hair that lights on fire. You saying I'm the type of guy to get saddled with a crappy superpower?"

"I'm saying you're the one who brought up crying and breaking mirrors," she teased, shrugging.

Sam laughed and shook his head. "So, if I could cry and break mirrors, I wonder what your crappy superpower would be."

He tapped his chin thoughtfully. "You," he started, pointing at her, "would shoot Red Bull out of your eyes. That's what I think you'd do."

Annie made a face at him. "I don't even drink Red Bull," she told him. "It just made me really hyper." And no one needed a hyper Annie.

"What's wrong with being really hyper?" Sam asked, laughing at that face. "Wouldn't you be more productive if you were more hyper? I thought that would stoke that competitive fire you've got."

"You would think, wouldn't you?" said she who totally knew better. "It really just ends in bad things. I try to stay away from it."

"That a rule for caffeine in general or just Red Bull?" Sam wondered. "I thought most high school students lived off coffee and other crap that's bad for them. You know, I even think it's in the Constitution somewhere."

"It's not, in case you were wondering," she said. She might have known he was joking. "Maybe I'm just not most high school students."
