Fifth Floor Common Room [Saturday morning]

Apr 16, 2011 10:06

Sookie was a little surprised this morning -- obviously, since the future-children had been to visit already, it wasn't going to happen again. But when she had woken up still seventeen (still prom queen!) and found Bobby decidedly...smaller, and younger by about ten years, she could've been knocked over by a feather ( Read more... )

Bobby was torn between cartoons and, well... "Can I help?"

"Hmmm." Sookie studied him as she started putting together the batter. "I think I have one thing I can have you do. Do you think you can manage it? I need someone really, really strong for this job."

"Me!" Bobby bounced at Sookie. "I'm strong! I can do it! Do what?"

This was likely going to end disastrously, but she could always make more batter. Sookie made sure the ingredients were incorporated before handing the bowl to Bobby along with a spoon. "I need you to stir that really well, okay?"

Jonothon was hungry. He was hungry, and all he had in his room was a stupid crown (that he was going to wear because being the king was awesome) and a cat.

And he couldn't eat either, because both of them were pointy and kitties probably didn't taste very good. But that wasn't going to stop him from making his way around the dorms in search of food, with the crown sitting very crookedly on his head so that it didn't fall down over his face, and a very squirmy cat in his arms.

"I smell food," he announced. Because that was just what you said when you were hungry and thought that manners were dumb.

"I bet you do," Sookie said, already setting to work putting together a plate of pancakes for him. The crown was a bit of a tip-off, though the absence of his usual accoutrements threw her for a second. The accent helped, though. "Would you like some, Jono? What do you say, first?"

That's right. Sookie's enforcing manners. Again.

Oh, Sookie. That was mean. He was obviously a starving child, here! He hadn't eaten anything since forever, and did you have any idea how much work it was to remember all the words?

That said, he managed to only look a little bit like the whole world was ending as he wrinkled his nose and muttered, "Please."

Joni gave a sorrowful mewl in counterpoint. It was possible that she was going to be the more polite one, here.

"Good job," she said, setting the pancakes out before him. Because really, he not only looked mildly pathetic about it, but he'd said the correct word and the cat had helped. She couldn't have asked for a better presentation. "And your kitty is very sweet. And polite! I think she said please, too."

The next child to stroll into the common room was a pretty well-dressed 7-year-old. Jeremy was in his 'I wanna dress like daddy!" phase, and he knew he wouldn't be served by the Darling kitchen staff here, so he'd felt like changing out of his space-pattern pyjamas and was now sporting a dress shirt and red suspenders with his dark pants.

There was nothing refined about the look of glee on his face when he spotted what was going on in the kitchen area. "Oh my gosh, are there pancakes?"

"There certainly are!" Sookie said, waving her spatula at the little boy. This one, now, she wasn't sure she recognized right off the bat, but that was fine. She'd figure it out. "And bacon. And fruit!"

She was sort of hoping someone would want the fruit, too.

Jeremy... probably wasn't going to be that someone. "Bacon!" he enthused instead. "Can I have some, please?"

See, this one even had manners.

"Of course you may," Sookie said, putting together a plate for him. "My name's Sookie -- what's yours, honey?"

See, she could just ask their names, when she didn't recognize them. This was easier than the last kids who showed up. No one today was going to be mortally offended that Aunt Sookie didn't recognize them.

There was clearly something about a girl cooking pancakes that acted as a siren call to small boys, because yet another one was here to try and get in on that action. Chuck wandered over and hopped onto his tiptoes to peer over the table to see what she was doing.

"What're you makin'?"

"Pancakes," she said, smiling over at him. "Would you like some, too? They have chocolate chips. And there's bacon. And apples!"

No one was going to eat the fruit, Sookie.

No, no one was going to eat the fruit.

Chuck gripped the table with tiny hands to try and pull himself higher for a better view. "Chocolate chips and bacon?" Ellie never made him neat combinations like that! "That's weird," he told her. "... I'd like some." The, "pleaaaasse," came as an after thought, but he'd had it drilled into him over the years.

"The bacon's not in the pancakes," she assured him, putting together a plate. "That would be insane. And of course you may. I like your manners!"

And there was another seven-year-old who had followed the smell upstairs. Ender was all military poise, though, and he walked into the room with quiet confidence. "You're cooking for us?"

"I am cooking for people who would like pancakes and bacon, and who say please," Sookie assured him with a smile. "So, maybe."

"Then I'll have whatever you're making, please," Ender said, sounding neither fussed, nor really all that excited about 'pancakes' or 'bacon'. It was all breakfast.

Sookie put together a plate with chocolate-chip pancakes and some bacon, along with some apple slices simply because she thought maybe this time she'd be able to get away with it. "There you go, honey. I mean, unless you don't like pancakes. I could find you cereal or something."

What kid didn't like pancakes?
