Third Floor Common Room; Thursday Evening [ 04/14 ].

Apr 14, 2011 18:48

One could suppose that there were many things Alexander could be doing right now. He could be making sure all his dress tunics were in good condition if he wound up going to this prom event this weekend. He could be getting a head start on his examinations this weekend, especially all those languages that he'll never have to use again. He could ( Read more... )

Bruce was on his way back to his room when he decided to see if there was any action going on in the common rooms. And that... was some kind of action.

"Still looking for the Green Isle?" Bruce asked. Call it a lucky guess.

Rilla waved at Bruce and smiled. "Do you have your dance tickets?"

"You're not asking me out, are you?" Bruce checked.

"Of course not," Rilla stammered. "I'm a girl!"

"Hello, Alexander," Rilla said, popping her head, then the rest of her body, into the common room. "Oooh, is that an atlas? My brothers and sisters and I used to have such fun with an atlas."

This was what happened when you didn't have television.

Rilla was talking to a young man whose main form of entertainment growing up was a moose head in the dining hall.

And so it was a faint smile that crossed his face in response to Rilla, though it was tinged with the sadness of his hopeless pursuit. "Hello, Rilla. It's hardly an atlas," he admitted, "but still a small collection of maps recently sent to me from home. Our resident traveler has made some updates on his latest adventurers, so I was excited to see the changes. It seems the world always has something new to discover. Would you like to see?"

"Please," Rilla said enthusiastically, sitting down nearby. "What is different for you?"

"Well," Alexander said, gaining a little more of a grin. True, he may not have been closer to finding the Land of the Green Isles, but the opportunity to be a little closer to his home by talking about it was always a welcome retreat. He pulled one of the maps from the others and held it over to Rilla could see. "This is the land of Llewdor, where I grew up. It has never really been mapped in such detail before, as it used to be ruled by a tyrant who would not allow such things. It's fascinating to see it laid out like this..."

And incredible to think of how he'd managed to escape it.

Alexander returned the wave with a nod of his head. "Hello, Alex," he said. "Probably nothing of too much interest, unless you've got a curiosity for maps of far-away lands. My sister has sent me some updated documents of my world; they're very fascinating for one who has spent far too many hours pouring over them, though I'm sure they'd hold as much interest for those who have not."

"Then perhaps," Alexander mused, shuffling a little through them to pull out a particular one and offer it over for Alex to see, "we shall start with this one, a very interestingly done map of the kingdom of Daventry, my family's kingdom. It is still fairly new to me, as I did not grow up there, so it's still pretty fascinating for me, no matter how much my mother has drilled me on geography for formal reasons."

William did not have maps. He did, however, have a similar desire to not be labeled as reclusive. And so here he was, actively seeking out social engagement.

"Evening, Alexander," he greeted his roommate, wandering over to take a closer look at what he was working on. "What have you here?"

"Good evening, William." Alexander nodded, before lifting up one of the parchments in front of him. "I have more maps of my world. Hopefully you will not mind them adding to the clutter of them already upon my desk."

By clutter, clearly, he meant the neat little pile of them tucked tidily into a large portfolio. But, by Manannan...and his mother's, for that matter...standards, they were all a mess.

"I'd hardly call it clutter," William countered with an amused smile. Mostly because his own portion of the room was, at any given point, home to no small number of bits and pieces of modern technology that had been disassembled in order that William might get a closer look at their inner workings. "Which means, of course, that I do not mind in the slightest. More research, then?"

"More research," Alexander agreed, sighing slightly. "Daventry's resident research, one Mister Derek Karlavaegan, has recently returned from a few expeditions with a few updated maps of our world, and Rosella was kind enough to send them along in the hopes that they would be useful. While they certainly are intriguing, I'm afraid none of them quite hold what I am still looking for..."
