The Deck | Saturday Afternoon

It didn't count as moping if Caroline gave off the air of relaxing in the sunshine on the deck with a book. The day was too nice to stay cooped indoors when she had a magical ring to protect her from the evil rays of the sun and sunglasses to ensure no one saw her reaction to the book, should she actually read it and fall victim to tears ( Read more... )

After the...whatever the fuck that was last night, Nathan had gotten up fairly early for him and had taken off into town just to make it easier for the both of them to ignore each other.

Now, coming back with a cigarette already between his lips (but not lit), he spotted his confusing as fuck roommate on the deck which is where he'd hoped to smoke.

Whatever, the deck was big enough for the both of them and he was adamant that this wasn't his fucking fault. She'd been the one to suddenly start ignoring him so he was just going with the flow.

So, he stepped up on the deck without looking at her, lit the cigarette and sat down, back to her so he could smoke. It was petulant and childish but she'd started it.

Like Caroline could even pretend she hadn't heard him clomping onto the deck. At least she thought her sunglasses did a good job of hiding how hard she was staring at how Nathan refused to look at her and then actually sit with his back to her.

Jerk.

She angrily turned the page in her book despite failing to read the previous one and swore as it tore.

Hey, she'd started the ignoring yesterday, he was just going with the flow, wasn't he? Besides, sitting with his back to her meant he'd be less likely to be the first one to talk.

He was a jerk though but at least he was a jerk who just blowing smoke circles instead of taking out his phone and pretending to call someone who wasn't her just to be an even bigger jerk.

He was just so mature. Caroline really appreciated that in a guy and wished she could tell him in a way that wasn't just shooting daggers at his back with her eyes.

But be the first one to talk? She didn't think she could do that. At least not yet.

"Caroline! Hi!" Bobby had his science book under one arm. "What are you reading? Isn't it nice out?"

Bobby was a seriously welcome addition to the deck. "It's fantastic out! And you might judge my reading material but whatever, it's this book they made for a movie...or movie from the book. I don't know which came first but it's really good!" Well, the part she'd read seemed good.

He did what he could. "You could just look at the copyright date and the date of the movie and...you probably don't actually care, huh," he realised.

"Well, I wasn't going to like, set my happiness by it, but your idea would work if I did care?" Caroline was trying to be nice. It was a difficult state for her to maintain of late. "Do you read a lot, Bobby?"

"Well, at least you don't sparkle," Jake observed. He was coming from the direction of the preserve, wearing nothing but a pair of cut off jeans which was enough evidence for what he'd been doing there.

Nothing but a pair of cut off jeans meant Caroline tipped her sunglasses down to get a really good view of Jake's approach. Hot damn did she appreciate that view.

"Only when I apply the glitter myself," Caroline assured him with a welcoming smile.

"Lucky you," Jake smirked. "The leeches I know sparkle like diamonds when they get in the sun." At least that was how Bella described it. "It's seriously gay."

"I'm far from gay," Caroline assured him. "I mean, I'm not against a little girl on girl when things call for it, but who isn't? And two hot guys making out? I'm not about to gag." Though sometimes she should just shut her mouth.
