Second Floor Common Room, Friday Morning

Mar 04, 2011 13:13

It had been a thankfully calm and uneventful week for once. Ender knew better than to hope that would continue, though he wasn't so bound by superstition that he feared acknowledging it aloud. However, not exactly being the type to talk to himself, he didn't anyway-- instead he was doing so by moving into the common room without his laptop this ( Read more... )

Other than going into work later, Bod had nothing else to do for the day. After reading in his room for a bit, he'd wandered downstairs several floors and stopped when he spotted Ender in the common room.

"Good morning," he greeted, stepping inside quietly. "How are things this Friday, Ender?"

"Quiet," Ender answered, glancing up over the couch. "Which isn't a bad thing, as far as I'm concerned, if rare. How about you?"

"Quiet as well," he said, finding a place to sit so he could stretch out his legs. "I've to work a little later so I'm taking some of that quiet time and using it to get out of my room. It's far too easy to just stay in there."

Ender could translate that one quite well, knowing what he did about Bod. "I guess I should extend that question to 'how have you been these past few days', by the sounds of it." He set his bowl of cereal down on the table.

Katniss was pink-cheeked from the cold this morning when she ducked into the common room, after a piece of fruit or some juice to nourish her after spending her early hours practicing her aim on squirrels.

"What are you watching?" she asked with interest, peering over at the television as she made her way into the kitchen.

"The History Channel," Ender offered, sending a quick glance in the unfamiliar girl's direction. "There's a documentary about war in ancient Greece; it's at least a little interesting."

"Ancient Greece," Katniss repeated interestedly, grabbing an apple before emerging again. "Is it about the wars themselves, or technique?"

She knew a little more about Rome than Greece, but from what she could tell, this could be helpful learning.

"The wars themselves," Ender provided. He took a sip of his milk. "Currently, the Battle of Salamis, if that means anything to you."

"Hi," Tara said, as she started rummaging through the cabinets for some oatmeal. "... oh, is this one of the ones about World War II?"

It was always one of the ones about World War II, as far as she could tell. But then, she didn't exactly watch the History channel a lot.

"Ancient Greece, actually," Ender provided, "But they seem to be advertising a lot about World War II at the moment, as is their wont. Hi, Tara."

"Oh, good," Tara said. "I like ancient Greece."

More goddesses, fewer tanks; of course it was Tara's preference.

"Hey," she added. "So is today the start of your weekend, too?"

"Actually, Wednesday was the start of my weekend," Ender said, with a little amusement in his voice. "For what amounts to 'weekend'. I like working."

Gabrielle couldn't hide out forever, and she'd at some point early this morning decided it would do her some good to get in touch with people again.

She still looked as if she hadn't been sleeping much, and was quieter and more sober than people might be used to seeing her act, but she was trying her best as she ventured into the common room and glanced at the TV.

"Oh, is the History Channel doing another one of those specials? They always get so much wrong."

. . . only by the standards of your world, Gabrielle.

[OOC: I HAD TO.]

"I hear that all the time," Ender said, without missing a beat, though he took the time to put his bowl down and give Gabrielle the appropriate amount of attention. "Speaking from experience?"

"The last time I saw a special about the Amazons, I nearly threw things at the TV." Gabrielle scowled, then leaned forward to squint at the screen, oblivious to the fact that she was on the completely wrong side of the anachronism when she commented as an aside, "I've never seen anyone use that kind of sword -- right, Amazons. Everything they were describing? My tribe would never do that."

And the best friend you're currently not speaking to has stirrups on her horse's riding gear, so stop it, Gabrielle.

"It could just be alternate history," Ender said, lightly. He was trying not to drive her to rant more. She seemed about ready for it. "Just today I've spoken to someone whose present laid in my past, but whose Earth was completely different. I wouldn't take it too personally."
