"Huh?" Caroline looked confused. "You say that like I'm not the only one who has issues with this coffee maker. Which, admittedly, is kind of nice because talking to appliances is so not normal." Not that Caroline was all that normal.
"It wasn't a coffeemaker the last time," Effy clarified, wandering in. "Microwave. But at least crazy has company?" Even if the company was Nathan, and therefore probably not much of a comfort.
Caroline might die if she knew it was Nathan. "Oh, well the microwave would be like really cooking and I don't think I'm up for that today. The coffee will have to sustain me until someone who cooks shows up." Which could take some time considering she already had her blood breakfast.
Jeremy should't have even been up yet. Regardless, he was, and since he didn't find anyone in his common room and was kind of used to having breakfast with people around, he grabbed one of his boxes of cereal and decided to come downstairs to find company.
And it wasn't even hard. "Heeey, there's coffee!" he said, letting that be his greeting as he entered the room. "Is it any good?"
Look, he'd learned to make coffee over his few weeks here, but it tended to end up just barely drinkable most days.
"Completely good," Caroline assured him, taking a moment to check out the new arrival. What? She was just looking. "Though complicated things like waffles are just beyond my abilities, coffee is totally something I can do. But then, you might have a different view on what makes something 'good.'"
"Making waffles is totally best left for professional chefs," Jeremy replied with some conviction as he sauntered over. "I tried that this week, and we ended up at the diner instead." He smiled. "But I'm sure your coffee's great."
Because she was a pretty girl and he would pretend to like her coffee even if it turned out to be bad. He just worked like that.
He was very smart to say so. "And were the professionals at the diner up to the task of waffles?" Caroline inquired. "I mean, I haven't heard anything about people being poisoned there, but you never know."
Nathan was an expert at not being hungover so he looked just about as fresh as a daisy when he wandered into the common room a little later. No, he was not following his roommate but she was a lot more fun to talk to than just laying in bed and staring at their ceiling.
"Did you not make me breakfast?" he asked when he wandered in, still stretching and yawning. "I was looking forward to a big plate of biscuits and gravy this morning. Why is reality so fucking cruel?"
Caroline frowned at Nathan's appearance in the common room. "And why would I make you anything ever? I seem to have forgotten the part where roommates were in charge of feeding one another."
"I took you out last night," he reminded her, flopping down beside her and putting his feet. He yawned again and scratched a hand through his hair. "Doesn't that make the morning after the night out your responsibility or something? I think there's a law somewhere that states that and you wouldn't wanna break the law, would you?"
"Um, you didn't take me out so much as I went out to the same place as you and fun was had," Caroline corrected, not wanting him to try to make too much out of their going out for roommate bonding time. "Besides, there's no law like that."

Another question. What was it with Effy always managing to walk in when people were?
