Herbert Hoover Campfire-Wednesday evening

May 13, 2009 16:42

Jaina still didn't want to be in the cabins. She'd gotten too used to privacy, too used to being able to spend time alone with her boyfriend, too used to having the time to get work done on her own schedule.

But she wandered out to the campfire when she had some free time anyway, figuring that at least radio would say she tried. Because she had ( Read more... )

Effy had so far failed epically at cabin living, by not even speaking to any of the people she was living with. This didn't particularly bother her in the slightest, but that said, she wasn't quite antisocial enough to ignore the fact there was one sitting out there.

Maybe she's growing as a person.

... Or not.

Probably not.

Whatever, at least she sat down on one of the logs around the fire, and stretched out to watch this girl's attempts at firestarting. She might even offer to help. In a minute.

Jaina watched her for a moment through the corner of her eye, surprised that there wasn't an immediate greeting from someone she didn't know. It was sort of refreshing.

"It's probably wrong that I haven't met you yet," Jaina said.

"I am living with you." So yes, it was probably a little wrong. But as usual, Effy could find a way around saying that outright. It was implied. "For now."

"It does make things a little easier to get names rather than 'Hey you'ing all over," she said, nodding. "Jaina."

Turtle was killing her mun heading out for her usual campfire visiting, and it looked like it would be Hoover tonight.

"How's it going?" she asked the general public as she took a seat.

"We're halfway through the week, I'd say it's going well," Jaina decided. "Where'd you come over from?"

"Cleveland," Turtle said, wrinkling her nose a little. "I wanted to be in FDR."

She frowned. She'd done just enough research to know the cabins were presidents. "Why did you want to be in FDR?"

Gabrielle was humming to herself in her usual awful, tuneless way as she wandered through the campground, and couldn't help spotting someone having trouble with the fire.

"Do you need any help with that?"

This could either go really well, or really badly. Who knew, with her?

Jaina had no doubt she could get it in time, but who was she to turn down help from someone who might be better at it? She offered the stick, saying, "If you want to help, knock yourself out."

Gabrielle crouched down beside the fire and started rearranging some of the wood, adding tinder and dried leaves. "It's not so hard once you get the hang of it," she said, twitching a log a little to the left. "Try having to do this every night if you want to go to sleep without freezing to death. Or get eaten by bugs. Sometimes I think the bugs are worse. In that sort of situation you tend to learn really, really fast."

Note that she had not actually gotten the fire started yet.

Oh, Jaina was noting. She wasn't saying anything yet, though. "I'd really rather not have to try that," she admitted. "Where are you from?"

Lois plopped down next to Jaina, bag of marshmallows in her hand. "I wonder how long it's gonna be before I get tired of s'mores."

"Just in time to leave the cabins, so you can get sick of them all over again next session?" she guessed.

"My luck tends to work that way," she said, grabbing a handful before offering the bag to Jaina. "I think I'm going to need to experiment to see what other foods I can put on a stick and shove into a fire."

"...that is if we can get a fire going."

"It'll happen," Jaina promised. "And that experiment scares me, you know. There's no way it's going well."

"Hoover, huh?" John remarked, taking a seat. "Think they'll make you vacuum?" It was lame, but then, so was he.

"Are you going to be surprised when I say you totally lost me on that one?" Because Jaina had had absolutely no reason to vacuum here.

"No," he said. "But I will tell you that your cabin's named after a giant dam near Vegas. Look at me offering valuable information."

solo_sword May 14 2009, 00:46:23 UTC
"Thank you for that. If I ever end up near Vegas, I'm sure I'll actually remember it." Not that she knew how that would happen. "Bored of your cabin or did you just miss me that much?"
